When last season ended, it was pretty clear that things had to change on the offensive line – and change drastically.
It was so drastic that Jerry Jones did something he’s never done before and that’s take an offensive tackle in the first round of the draft, getting Tyron Smith at No. 9 overall.
And it seemed like the Cowboys might make a few more changes to the middle of the offensive line, particularly at the guard position. And they still could do that, depending on what happens here in the next week to 10 days in free agency. With a new salary cap that will undoubtedly squeeze the Cowboys more than most teams, it’s likely they will have to make a few salary cuts.
But it’s a risky deal now with the offensive line.
Is everyone really Ok with cutting Leonard Davis with less than two weeks to go before training camp? And that’s assuming Kyle Kosier can be re-signed. I think Montrae Holland is a serviceable player who can probably start at either position, but with camp and the preseason approaching quickly, I’m not so sure it makes the best sense to overhaul the interior of the line.
It’d be one thing if David Arkin had a good offseason and picked up the offense better than expected. But because of the lockout, he hasn’t been able to learn anything. No OTAs for him. No mini-camps as well. So Arkin will come into training camp like these rookies do in May – one week after they get drafted for the rookie mini-camp where their heads are likely spinning for three straight days.
You can’t really count on Arkin to push Davis or Kosier right now.
And when it comes to the cap, cutting Davis would count about $7.5 million on the cap. If he plays this year, Davis would count roughly $9.4 million. So you would save nearly $2 million to cut him, but then again you have to find a replacement. And it’s got to be done in about two weeks.
