Eatman: My Three Right-of-First-Refusal Guys

My Three Right-of-First-Refusal Guys

If you’ve been halfway following the recent lockout news, I would say there are some reasons for optimism here this week. It does seem like the full-court press is on from both sides.

And one of the sticking points has been this proposal by the owners to give all NFL teams the chance to sign three of their own free agents, giving the clubs right-of-first refusal. Basically, it’s the owners’ contingency plan for allowing players to become free agents after four years. They want ROFR on all free agents entering their fifth and sixth seasons. In other words, they’re not unrestricted free agents any more, but rather restricted.

That seems to be a pretty big sticking point by the players, who have reportedly rejected that offer each time it hits the table.

But, for arguments sake, let’s just say it eventually passes. Who would be your three guys to exercise this option on if you’re Jerry Jones and the Cowboys?

I think it’s pretty easy actually. For starters, it’s got to be Doug Free. If he is offered a contract by another team, you have to either match it over go over the top with a better deal. This team cannot have any more problems at either tackle spot. He’s got to be locked up.

Secondly, I’d go with Gerald Sensabaugh. I think signing him is so important because of his versatility and experience. He was arguably the most consistent defensive back on the team last year.

And next would be Stephen Bowen. Because he hasn’t started much, you wonder just what his market value will be. You can allow him to test the waters and if he comes back with healthy contract offers, then the Cowboys will know exactly what they need to do with him. I think he’s a guy that needs to be re-signed.

If that deal goes through, I’m saying the Cowboys should use their ROFR cards on Free, Sensabaugh and Bowen – in that order.

STFU! Sensabaugh is through. He's getting older and will not get any better, and he wants a big payday. I'd rather we kept Hamlin than Sensy.

I think Sensy will be gone because someone offers him a better contract than we will. I think the team wants him but not long term and not for a lot of money.
