(Editor's Note: Leading into the upcoming NFL Draft, held April 26-28, DallasCowboys.com will take a closer look at the prospects, including some that could be potential fits with the Cowboys. Today's featured player is LSU defensive lineman Michael Brockers.)
Name: Michael Brockers
Position: Defensive End / Tackle
College: LSU
Height/Weight: 6-6 / 305
Age: 21 (born Nov. 21, 1990)
Strengths: Any time the word "freak" is used to describe an NFL player, it's a good thing, especially for a player weighing over 300 pounds. Brockers is said to have freakish qualities with his ability to get up the field and be disruptive for a man his size. Playing at LSU, he certainly faced top-notch competition on a weekly basis.
Weaknesses: While he had a dominating sophomore season, Brockers is still only three seasons removed from his high school, and has only played two years. He redshirted as a freshman in 2009 before playing the last two years for the Tigers. With that, his instincts aren't there just yet. Because he's so big and powerful, the book on Brockers is that he relies on those attributes often. In the NFL, sometimes that can get you in trouble if your technique isn't equally sound.
Sound Bites: On his decision to leave LSU after just two seasons: "I feel like I did pretty good in the SEC. I feel like I accomplished a lot. Winning the SEC championship, playing in the national championship. I know I didn't win the national championship, we didn't win it, I feel like everything I wanted to do was accomplished. I also wanted to help my mom and my family financially. So I wanted to push my potential to the next level. I can only get better from now on. That's really my mindset. I can only get better."
Where He's Headed: Somewhere in the teens of the first round. Various mock drafts have Brockers anywhere from the 13th pick to as low as No. 20. Because he's a different position in different schemes, it would tend to throw his value around more than others. He'd probably fit both the 3-4 and 4-3 scheme, therefore he should be on the board for most teams.
How He Helps the Cowboys: The one spot the Cowboys never really addressed in free agency was the defensive line. Brockers was listed as a defensive tackle in college, but in a 3-4 scheme, he'd likely play end. His ability to beat double-teams and get up the field, along with a rare ability to get lateral and extend plays to the sideline, will make a versatile and productive player. The Cowboys haven't had a catalytic 3-4 end since moving to the scheme in 2005 and Brockers would give them a chance for that.
