Mock drafts. We all love them, we all immediately look at the team we have interest in and see what this particular publication thinks will happen, some seven weeks away.
I think by now, because you could literally find about 100 different publications or websites that run mock drafts, we know how much weight to put into these. Still, it’s fun to think about the possibilities of certain players ending up on your squad.
And some mocks are obviously more substantial than others. Here recently, ESPN’s draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. just revealed his third mock draft and had an interesting choice for the Cowboys, especially with the players he had available.
Kiper went with North Alabama’s Janoris Jenkins with the No. 14 pick, bypassing Stanford guard David DeCastro and both Alabama defensive backs Dre Kirkpatrick and Mark Barron.
Here’s Kiper’s reasoning for the Jenkins pick:
No. 14 Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabamahe secondary is clearly a weakness for Dallas, which has to target the best available defensive back at this point. Cowboys CB Terence Newman is entering his 10th season and Mike Jenkins -- the only corner Dallas drafted in the first three rounds of the last five drafts -- has not panned out. Janoris Jenkins has some character baggage, but he had a strong Senior Bowl week and is the top cover man on the board at this point.Mock drafts. So personally, I agree with this. I’ve written on this blog before how much I like Jenkins and think he will be a very good player. Yeah, he’s got a sketchy past but at least he’s shown the ability to overcome that in the last few years. It doesn’t mean he’s headed for the choir anytime soon, but he’s probably a player the Cowboys can feel good about taking, both on and off the field.
Again, these mock drafts are tough because we haven’t had free agency yet. If the Cowboys go out and land Cortland Finnegan or Brandon Carr, or maybe even Carlos Rogers, then getting a cornerback at No. 14 seems unlikely.
