I’ll be the first to admit I was a little surprised to hear Sammy Morris’ name when asked about the newest running back replacement for this team.

Sure, we heard names like Clinton Portis or Larry Johnson thrown around, or even Lonyae Miller from the Raiders’ practice squad. Personally, I thought it would be Miller or some other young back who might have some potential for down the road. I definitely didn’t think it would be a guy like Morris, a career backup who really hasn’t been a standout player in his career. Actually serviceable is a better word to describe him.

Then again, that’s what the Cowboys need more than ever right now. Some service? They need a guy to service the position and provide some experience, depth and even special teams. Morris should be able to do all of that.

And let’s not forget that this scouting department – at least the pro personnel side – has done a nice job so far this year in adding players to the roster.

Be honest, nobody got excited about the additions of Laurent Robinson or Tony Fiammetta and even Frank Walker. It’s doubtful most people had ever really heard of any of those guys before they came here early this season.

Walker has been steady in the nickel and dime packages. Fiammetta might be the most underrated player on this team, if it’s not Robinson, who has clearly been the most consistent receiver on the squad. He came here with four touchdowns in four years. He’s caught eight touchdowns in 11 games.

So maybe, just maybe the scouting department is on to something with Morris, too.

I know I'll catch hell for this but I would've brought in Portis or Barber for a workout.

Both would've of been great third down options and plus we play the Giants again. Tiki in New York pawning the Giants would be epic.

Tiki fumbling to the Giants would be more likely.

Isnt being a 3rd down option exactly what Morris has done for years?

I'm not against the signing. It would've been nice to bring in a few more backs to look at is all.

Portis and Barber are worth a look. What happens if Felix strains his pussy again? Guys like Portis and Barber are used to carrying the ball 20 plus carries.

Barber hasnt carried a football in years, not sure its reasonable to expect him to do anything in a game, let alone carry the laod for a team.

There's a reason nobody signed him to even be a few carry a game backup.

Portis was hardly injury free during his career especially at the end.

How is a seasoned vet a "scouting find"?

Behind Kitna and Brooking he has the most time under his belt of any player on the roster.

I like how he played though. Ran tough. It's pretty amazing what a guy without a guaranteed paycheck a week ago will do once given a shot. I don't think effort will be a problem.
