Browns Safety Has Familiar Ties
Nick Eatman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer
(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of the veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is Cleveland safety Abram Elam.)

Name: Abram Elam
Position:Safety
College: Kent State
Height/Weight: 6-0/207
Age: 29
NFL Experience: 5 seasons

Availability: Elam is expected to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the lockout. He signed a one-year restricted deal with the Browns last season. It doesn't appear he will be in Cleveland's plans in 2011, regardless of the outcome of the lockout and pending CBA situation.

What He Brings: Elam would likely bring a combination of athleticism, familiarity, versatility, and probably most importantly, affordability. Not only does he have experience with Rob Ryan, having spent two years in Cleveland, but Elam also had a season in Dallas in 2006. He's had experience playing both free and strong safety, which adds to his value. Last year, Elam was fourth on the Browns' defense with 77 tackles, including 63 solo stops, with 10 pass deflections. He has shown signs becoming a playmaker, scoring two touchdowns in the last two years, on an interception return and a fumble return.

Connections: New Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has coached Elam the last two years in Cleveland. That alone is usually enough to get something in the works if that's the route the Cowboys want to go. However, the team is already familiar with Elam's work, having had him here for two training camps in 2006 and 2007. Despite a strong showing in the 2007 camp, Elam was cut one day after it appeared he had made the 53-man roster.

Where Would He Fit: If signed, Elam would fit in as one of the starting safeties. Now, it would depend on the other safety where he would line up. If they can re-sign Gerald Sensabaugh, then Elam would likely play free safety. But if the Cowboys ended up signing two new safeties, for instance someone like Michael Huff, then Elam could slide over to strong safety, showing off his versatility.

I would much rather prefer Elam at strong safety over Sensabaugh. Hell, I might prefer Marc Colombo at strong safety over Seesnoball.

Elam to me is the most attractive FA signing for safety. With how the lockout is going to shorten the amount of time Ryan is going to get to implement his D here, it would be very beneficial if at least one of his defenders is well-versed in it to help everyone get on the same page. It's a bonus if that guy is in the secondary, and plays a position, safety, where they usually direct that area, as I don't want to see another shoving match between our secondary players because one of them ****ed up the read. Plus he isn't going to break the bank.

He wasn't bad playing in New York for the Jets either.

This opinion not associated with SBK Inc.........

I thought he was fairly impressive during his brief tenure with the club. Jerry and Co. felt set for obvious reasons with the Hamlin/Williams duo before they faded into the abyss. He showed a better skillset than what we hung onto for backups at the safety position. To me he was a more viable back up option than the green Courtney Brown and Keith Davis who could blow you up on special teams but couldn't cover a geriatric covered in super glue. Made the final roster in 2007 but was later waived when the Cowboys who picked up the ever dangerous Justin Rogers who was waived by the Patriots.
