Browns Safety Has Familiar Ties

(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of the veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is Cleveland safety Abram Elam.)
Name: Abram Elam
Position:Safety
College: Kent State
Height/Weight: 6-0/207
Age: 29
NFL Experience: 5 seasons
Availability: Elam is expected to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the lockout. He signed a one-year restricted deal with the Browns last season. It doesn't appear he will be in Cleveland's plans in 2011, regardless of the outcome of the lockout and pending CBA situation.
What He Brings: Elam would likely bring a combination of athleticism, familiarity, versatility, and probably most importantly, affordability. Not only does he have experience with Rob Ryan, having spent two years in Cleveland, but Elam also had a season in Dallas in 2006. He's had experience playing both free and strong safety, which adds to his value. Last year, Elam was fourth on the Browns' defense with 77 tackles, including 63 solo stops, with 10 pass deflections. He has shown signs becoming a playmaker, scoring two touchdowns in the last two years, on an interception return and a fumble return.
Connections: New Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has coached Elam the last two years in Cleveland. That alone is usually enough to get something in the works if that's the route the Cowboys want to go. However, the team is already familiar with Elam's work, having had him here for two training camps in 2006 and 2007. Despite a strong showing in the 2007 camp, Elam was cut one day after it appeared he had made the 53-man roster.
Where Would He Fit: If signed, Elam would fit in as one of the starting safeties. Now, it would depend on the other safety where he would line up. If they can re-sign Gerald Sensabaugh, then Elam would likely play free safety. But if the Cowboys ended up signing two new safeties, for instance someone like Michael Huff, then Elam could slide over to strong safety, showing off his versatility.
