Early Competition
Cowboys Sign Veteran Kicker Kris Brown

Nick Eatman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas - Following Saturday's disappointing loss to the Cardinals, which included a crucial missed extra point in a 27-26 defeat, even special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis suggested the Cowboys should consider giving David Buehler some serious competition next season at place-kicker.

Apparently, the Cowboys have already found their man.

Two days before the season finale in Philadelphia, the Cowboys have signed veteran place-kicker Kris Brown on the 53-man roster. While Buehler will remain the kicker and likely handle the duties this week, the move puts Brown on the roster going into the offseason.

Had the Cowboys waited until after the season, they likely would've had more competition from other teams in attempt to sign Brown, who has spent 12 seasons in the NFL.

Brown has made 77.3 percent of his field goals, but he was cut by the Texas at the end of the preseason in August.

Brown, a native of nearby Southlake, Texas, had a short stint with the Chargers earlier this season, missing a critical field goal against the Patriots. But most of his career has been with the Houston Texans, where he played eight seasons

Eh. I guess this is veteran competition but the guy is about as marginal as you can get.

Jerry signed someone Buehler has a good chance of beating out. He's obsessed with Buehler, I wish I could strangle the life out of that old man sometimes.

Buehler would have to implode to lose this battle. Just his kickoff ability gives him a big advantage.

I agree with Bonecrusher. This is more of a cosmetic move to make it appear like they're doing something.

Who do you not-so-smart guys suggest we bring in instead?

I wanted to bring in Rackers but there were a lot of complaints about him not being clutch enough. I guess clutch is better than accurate considering he is above 90% over his last three seasons.

Cowboys kicking competition starts now, not this off-season

It would be wrong to assume that the kicking competition between David Buehler and Kris Brown begins this off-season.

It begins the moment Brown takes the practice field Friday.

This isn't a position player who needs to learn the playbooks or get a feel for how to interact with his teammates before he can contribute. This is a kicker. If he kicks better than Buehler on Friday and Saturday, why wouldn't the Cowboys have him handle the field goals and Buehler the kickoffs in the finale against Philadelphia?

The Cowboys will observe both kickers over the next two days before determining who they are more comfortable with against the Eagles

You have to root for Buehler. I want a kicker who has plenty of leg for 50+ yard FGs.
