Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson was interviewed on KESN-FM on Monday to discuss Tashard Choice and his game against the Indianapolis Colts. Here are some highlights:
Where has this Tashard Choice been and did he show enough to make fans wonder why he hasn't been getting more carries?
He showed me exactly what I thought he would show me. He showed me what he showed me every time he's gotten an opportunity to play. Two years ago, when he played against Pittsburgh and that great defense and they were holding everyone under 100 yards, he rushed for 100 yards in that game up there. Last year against Kansas City and their defense, he had 90-something yards and he got the opportunity with 20-or-so touches in that game. And yesterday, he got that opportunity and he showed me what he can do. I just like his style of running. When you look at the three running backs, to me, he's more of the natural guy. When you look at running back, you say, "Yea, he's got it all as compared to some of the other guys."
Felix Jones has the speed but he doesn't have that great ability to run inside or the judgment to set up blocks or cut in off those blocks and run to daylight. Marion Barber doesn't have the speed to cut around corners; he's more of an inside runner. But I think Tashard Choice brings the whole package and I was very impressed and happy for him for what he did yesterday. And also the enthusiasm that he plays with, I think that's part of the position too. He reminds me a little of Emmitt Smith, how Emmitt Smith used to flow and let the linemen...
Both you and Jerry Jones have now compared Tashard Choice to Emmitt Smith but you can't bring up Emmitt for a guy who doesn't get touches, right?
Well, that's true but he's getting them now and I think he'll continue to get them. I think he's proven that he can play; if he can't play here, if they don't want him here, I'm sure somebody in the NFL would love to have him. But I understand what Jerry was saying in that situation. He needed to do more than just stand on the sideline and hold a helmet. If Drew Pearson can cover kickoffs his rookie year and returns punts, Tashard Choice can get out there and do something, so I understand where Jerry was coming with that comment.
Is the reason Tashard Choice hasn't had many carries because of his special teams' shortcomings or is it because Marion Barber's contract mandates that he has to play?Oh, probably a little bit of both. Barber...you know, I don't understand that situation; why they feel so close to him as far as keeping him as the starter, contract or no. Production is what it's all about and production is not there. But again, I understand where Jerry is coming from; if you're the third string running back, you need to contribute other than standing on the sideline, holding your helmet and being a little frustrated because you're not getting opportunities. You should want to get on the field in any kind of capacity. I would have been begging to return kicks, cover kicks, do something just to get out there on the football field.
