Gil Brandt, the former long-time Cowboys scouting executive, has seen the NFL Draft's interest grow exponentially since 1960. Back in the day, he says, teams used to draft in a ballroom and there might be eight or nine reporters around for the scoop. Players wouldn't even know they'd been selected if not for a transaction page.
Now, Brandt can't finish analyzing a draft for NFL.com before he gets flooded with fan's questions on next year's prospects.
Who better to ask about the Cowboys' 2011 needs? I gave it a shot when Brandt visited us on Radio Row last week.
“You should get a very good player at No. 9," he said. "I think what you have to do is you have to decide priority wise what is more important to your team. I think you put them in plateaus.
"Let’s say you have Nate Solder, the big tackle, and you have a defensive end or a defensive lineman. I think what you probably have to do is take the defensive lineman because it’s probably easier to come up with an offensive lineman in the second, third. (Doug) Free was a fourth-round pick and he’s a pretty good football player. You very seldom find very good pass rushing defensive linemen outside of the first round.”
There's Brandt's two cents. We've got a few more weeks to discuss the Cowboys' potential targets, but offensive line and defensive line are certainly two of them.
