Jerry Jones rules out Kitna, questions Austin's return
November, 25, 2011

By Calvin Watkins
On his twice-weekly radio show on KRLD-FM, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones ruled out backup quarterback Jon Kitna (back) and fullback Tony Fiammetta (illness) for next week's game at Arizona.

The Fiammetta injury is a mystery.

Team medical officials are still trying to figure out what's wrong with the fullback. Jones said the illness is not bone or soft tissue related. But Fiammetta continues to get sick when trying to workout.

"It shouldn’t be cloaked in mystique," Jones said on his show. "It's just that it's hard for him to do football things. It's hard for him to do some things without nausea or without being incapable of doing them. So he’s certainly under the care of a real evaluation. Right now we can't and he can't function the way you have to, to play football. We don’t know, that’s it."

Kitna's season is in real doubt with his back injury. The Cowboys tried to claim quarterback Kyle Orton this week after he was released by Denver. But the Kansas City Chiefs were rewarded him over Dallas.

However, there is a chance the Cowboys could sign a quarterback.

"We were probably trying to make sure we didn’t have a guessing game here at backup quarterback relative to Kitna," Jones said regarding the claim for Orton. "I don’t know on Kitna. We just have to see how that goes."

Jones also said wide receiver Miles Austin (hamstring) is questionable for the Arizona game, saying "maybe" when asked about his status. Jones said Mike Jenkins (hamstring) should play vs. Arizona.

"For sure," Jones said.

It's interesting that Jones isn't as confident in Austin's return as he is Jenkins.

The Cowboys receiver has missed the last three games with the injury and is doing some light rehab work.

“I’m trying to be back as soon as possible, and that would be as soon as possible,” Austin said after Thursday's game vs. Miami.

Jenkins did some pregame warmups and feels better.

"I want to show the trainers that I can get out there this week," Jenkins said. "I think I’ve been doing a god job. It’s progressing. We’ve got a big break here, 10 days or so, so we’re just going to try to capitalize with those days and get back on the field."

Jenkins is probably more important for us vs Arizona because of the Fitzgerald factor. We can probably get by w/o Austin for one more game. Arizona's defense isnt very good. They currently rank 28th in total defense (over 380 yds per game), give up 24 pts per game, only have 9 picks for the yr and rank 24th in rushing defense.

I agree we need Jenkins now.

Regardless of year or circumstances this team usually struggles with the Cardinals in Arizona. The Cowboys have lost 6 of the last 7 trips to the desert. I could easily see another Skins / Dolphins type game unfolding next weekend.

It's not a mystery as to why Austin would be questionable while Jenkins is a sure thing to play. Austin suffered his hamstring injury one week after Jenkins did.

And it's good to know that Fiammetta is under the care of a piece of paper:

So he’s certainly under the care of a real evaluation

Sounds like someone on welfare on Judge Judy trying to appear smart, when he talks.

Romo broke his finger, McBriar broke his leg, Barber I think was never the same after that game...it was like THE game that destroyed our season.
