SAN ANTONIO -- The length of the Doug Free’s deal is something of a surprise considering the Cowboys’ recent past, but it is a great thing for the left tackle.
He will be 30 when he hits the open market again. For a tackle, that’s the middle of his prime, so Free could have a chance to cash in for a second time if he continues to develop like the Cowboys think he will. Remember, he has started only one full season at left tackle so there is plenty of room to grow.
The Cowboys have mostly done six-year extensions with players like DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin. They negotiated seven-year deals with Leonard Davis, Terence Newman and Marion Barber.
The Cowboys had to keep Free. He was the priority, especially on a line that could look vastly different in 2011.
From the looks of it, he got what he wanted and the Cowboys got what they wanted.
