ARLINGTON, Texas -- When Jerry Jones became the owner and general manager of the Cowboys he thought there could be a way Jimmy Johnson would be the franchise’s coach for the next 29 years the way Tom Landry was the coach for the first 29.
On Thursday Jones hired his seventh coach in Jason Garret in the last 22 seasons.
“We are totally aligned in the vision of what we could see in the future with what we might get going here with Jason Garrett as head coach,” Jones said. “So there is a long-term look and you can dream about that longer term look. I know when I first got into the NFL I was naïve and I could dream that maybe 29 more years we could get a coach that we had with Coach Landry. Those are different times, different days, but you can dream that the thing is in place with Jason because of his age and frankly his experience in growing up in NFL football.”
Jones’ previous six hires – Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips – lasted on average 57.3 regular-season games, or slightly less than four full seasons.
Does Garrett go over that average?
