The five best Dallas Cowboys safeties of all time, ranked: Where do Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters fit in?
By SportsDayDFW.com

Editor's note: SportsDay is beginning a series that attempts to figure out the best Dallas Cowboys players at each position. Today we examine safeties.

The Dallas Cowboys' organization is one of great success and has an illustrious history. There have been some big names that have worn jerseys for America's Team.

Out of all of the safeties in franchise history, who was the best? That's what our panel of writers and columnists tried to determine.

Voters each named their top five safeties. A first-place vote counted for five points, second place gets four points, third place gets three points and so on.

Those who listed their top five players include Brandon George, Kate Hairopoulos, David Moore, Jon Machota, Tim Cowlishaw, Rick Gosselin and Kevin Sherrington.

Here's how they broke it down:

1. Cliff Harris (7 first-place votes), 35 points

2. Darren Wooson, 28 points

3. Charlie Waters, 21 points

4. Roy Williams, 14 points

5. James Washington, 5 points

Others receiving votes
Michael Downs, 2 votes

The rundown
George: It's been way too long for the Cowboys to be without a dominant safety, such as Harris and Woodson.
Hairopoulos: Harris came from powerhouse Ouachita Baptist to play in five Super Bowls.
Moore: Woodson was ahead of his time at the position. Harris and Waters helped define their time.
Machota: Harris went to six Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro four times. Not bad for an undrafted rookie free agent.
Cowlishaw: Cliff and Charlie set a tone for America's Team
Gosselin: Washington should have been the MVP of the second Buffalo Super Bowl with his 11 tackles, interception & game-turning 46-yard fumble recovery for a TD.
Sherrington: No coincidence that Cowboys' D not same since Woody retired.

James Washington was definitely great in the 92 an 93 postseason. Just had a knack for big plays and was a solid starter for 3 seasons here

Michael Downs was a solid player and was a starter for a lot of the 80's. Had 3 seasons with 6 or more picks.

How did Roy Williams get 14 votes? Sure he was awesome for three years. But then he was a trainwreck back there.

He wasn't really a train wreck, but his play definitely dipped and his last couple yrs he just didn't have any football motivation it appeared.

Cornell Green played Safety the last part of his career, and he went to one Pro Bowl as a Safety. I guess most here consider him a CB though.

He didn't even look the same. He wore the long sleeves all time and didn't seem as aggressive at all. Could have been Delilah. Or maybe he stopped taking PEDs.

And Mel Renfro was an All Pro safety multiple times before Landry moved him to CB.

Renfro was the real deal.

Dennis Thurman was another guy who played both positions well. had a nose for the ball, too.
