The five best Cowboys special teams players of all time, ranked: Did a pretty good Dallas QB make the list?
By SportsDayDFW.com
Editor's note: SportsDay continues its series that attempts to figure out the best Dallas Cowboys players at each position. Today we examine special teams.
The Dallas Cowboys' organization is one of great success and has an illustrious history. There have been some big names that have worn jerseys for America's Team.
Out of all of the special teams players in franchise history, who was the best? That's what our panel of writers and columnists tried to determine.
Voters each named their top five special teams players. A first-place vote counted for five points, second place gets four points, third place gets three points and so on.
Those who listed their top five players include Brandon George, Kate Hairopoulos, David Moore, Jon Machota, Tim Cowlishaw, Rick Gosselin and Kevin Sherrington.
Here's how they broke it down:
1. Dan Bailey, K, 30 points (6 first-place votes)
2. Rafael Septien, K, 26 points
3. Mat McBriar, P, 15 points
4. Danny White, P, 10 points
5. (tie) Bob Hayes, KR, 8 points
5. (tie) Bill Bates, 8 points
Others receiving votes
Dale Hellestrae, LS (2 points); Deion Sanders, KR/PR (2 points); Mel Renfro, PR (4 points)
The rundown
George: Can still picture Prime Time high-stepping into the end zone after scoring on a return during team's dominant run in 1990s.
Hairopoulos: Hard to believe Bailey made only his first Pro Bowl last season.
Moore: It's gotten to the point that if Bailey misses three FGs it's considered a bad season.
Machota: The list didn't really have a spot for him, but it's impossible to discuss the history of the Cowboys' special teams unit without mentioning Bill Bates.
Cowlishaw: Hayes and Renfro, "The Jet Set," put team on map with their speed.
Gosselin: Not many NFL teams have had the luxury of an Olympic gold medalist returning kicks.
Sherrington: Deion was HOF CB, but watching him return punts was more fun.
