Cowboys explain why they're optimistic about pass rush; Stephen Jones names intriguing DE
By Jon Machota

OXNARD, Calif. -- As the Cowboys begin their first day of training camp, the biggest questions they face are on defense.
No. 1 on that list: How will they pressure opposing quarterbacks?

You've probably heard the stats by now, over the last four years only Atlanta and Oakland have fewer sacks than the Cowboys, who have averaged 31.8 per season.

Without DeMarcus Ware over the last two seasons, the Cowboys are averaging 29.5.

And expectations can't be much higher for a team that no longer has Greg Hardy (six sacks in 2015) or Jeremy Mincey (six sacks in 2014) and its two most talented defensive ends are suspended to open the season.

So what gives the Cowboys confidence that they can manufacture enough pass rush on Sundays?

"I just think the growth and development of the young players, some of the guys we've brought in who had really good offseasons for us, the combination of those guys, Rod Marinelli is an outstanding football coach," head coach Jason Garrett said. "I think we all know that. Leon Lett is an outstanding football coach and the combination it's a great environment for those young defensive linemen to develop.

"I think we have healthy competition at the defensive line. I think that will bring out the best out in the guys. They go against really good offensive linemen every day so we will develop and grow. The culture will be right, the environment will be right for them to do that. Having said that, in a lot of cases there's some guys out there who don't have that much experience playing at this level. But my experience has been if they're in the right environment, they're the right kind of guy and they have some talent they will grow and they will grow quickly. We're going to give them the chance to do that."

With DeMarcus Lawrence suspended the first four games and Randy Gregory out indefinitely, these are the four defensive ends the Cowboys will be depending on early in the season: Benson Mayowa, Ryan Russell, Charles Tapper and David Irving.

Mayowa was the team's most significant free agency signing at the position. Tapper, a fourth-round pick, was the Cowboys' top draft investment. Irving, 22, showed flashes last season after the Cowboys signed him off Kansas City's practice squad in September.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones specifically mentioned Russell, a 2015 fifth-round pick, when asked about young players who intrigue him.

"We think a lot of times players make their biggest jump after their first year," Jones said. "So a guy like a Russell is a guy who is very intriguing to me, had a great offseason and we're hoping that he'll bring that to camp here and continue to improve.

"We obviously drafted a couple guys here and it'll be great to watch them. Believe it or not, we are fired up about that group of guys and I think they have an unbelievable teacher [Marinelli] and coach and life coach and I know he'll be working them. So it'll be very interesting to watch how those guys do."

I am not optimistic, but I am also not a salesman like Jerry trying to polish a turd.

Unless they make a move for a proven guy, all we have is "hope"

Hope is usually not a good strategy.

Since the Jones regime is a bunch of liars we know that the opposite is true. They know damn well that they have mismanaged so bad that an all time record low for sacks is highly likely in 2016. Less than 20 total is easily within their reach. Less than 15 too. Hell, maybe even less than 10 total. That would be impressive indeed.

And to give you an idea of just how bad 29.5 is over the last couple of seasons, Martin had 23 in one season back when 14 games was the length of the season.

I think they'll do better than that but its definitely the #1 concern for the team IMO.

Playing with leads and controlling the ball should help, but there are going to be games when the D needs to make key/clutch stops too. Its definitely iffy at best right now whether they can do that, especially against good QB's.

Last year was a record for least amount of turnovers, and this year will be a record of least amount of sacks. Like Garrett, Marinelli will be too stubborn/stupid to get creative and create an advantage for the mediocre players. More excuses will be made next off season: wash, rinse, repeat.

I just hope the repeat part doesn't involve Garrett or Marinelli.

These idiots are delusional. But my guess is that they know what they have. But they're master manipulators, marketers and snake oil salesmen. Now go out and buy their merchandise, tickets, etc.

Darren Woodson was on Mike and Mike this AM, just killing the Cowboy defense. He sees what we all see, very little hope. But hey, if Stephen is optimisitic, I am sold. Who is with me.

Wow. Not good for sure. Woody is pretty realistic about stuff and obviously is well connected there. He's probably hearing from people how bad it really looks.

I don't understand the "playing with leads" option as a means to hel the defense. Was this always an option? How is this going to happen? Are all teams aware of this strategy or just us?

Look how lazy and/or shirking of his role as coach responsible for results, Jason Garrett is.

I think we have healthy competition at the defensive line. I think that will bring out the best out in the guys. They go against really good offensive linemen every day so we will develop and grow. It's basically that we set things up so that players can become whatever they are going to become. Where is the "this guy has some talent that we need to shape, mistakes that we need to correct and potential that we need to tap into"? They draft and acquire guys who are just kind of atypically valuable and or in need of PEDs. It's still that of the player does not end up effective, it wasn't Garretts fault.

One of my favorite football players of all time, as well as one of my favorite football minds. I'd love to see him get out of TV and get into a Front Office.

Is there a way to post the audio for the interview? Dooms ?

Smh at the fact that they are optimistic about the pass rush.

This is the same front office that thought they could trot out a broken down offensive line and will their way to a home game super bowl in what 2009? Whatever year it was.

I still remember that offseason before they attempted that. The usual homers were telling us Marc Columbo and Leonard Davis were gunna be fine.

Fuck this team.

There you go. It got Garrett a new 5 year contract. ONE winning season in 5 years and he's washed his hands of being responsible for any results or records. Only with Jerry is this possible. Garrett is a bigger BSer than Jerry and Jerry is still buying all the BS. The only thing Garrett has mastered is how to keep his job w/o being successful. Nothing is ever Garrett's fault. Seriously, how does this happen in a profession where results are all that matter?

A front office of Aikman and Woodson (minus Johnny Walker GM) would have me go ultra homer. You guys would probably all leave.

But I wouldn't give a shit.
