Nothing has changed: Jason Garrett remains leading candidate but no deal is in place
David Moore / Reporter
Is Jason Garrett the leading candidate to become the Cowboys head coach once this season is over?
Yes. That is consistent with what the DMN has reported for weeks. Other outlets have also framed Garrett's future in that context. Jerry Jones identified Garrett long ago as someone he thought could coach this team. You don't install Garrett as the offensive coordinator before you hire Wade Phillips to coach the team if you don't plan on turning the team over to him one day.
Is it a done deal?
No. All signs point in that direction. But club officials deny the NFL Network report that states they have removed the interim label from Garrett's title and installed him as head coach. They deny the NFL Network report that states receivers coach Ray Sherman has been interviewed. He has not been interviewed.
Jones said one week ago that he would interview Sherman and at least one other minority candidate to exceed the Rooney Rule regarding minority candidates.
If Bill Cowher expresses an interest, if Jeff Fisher and Tennessee part ways, Jones will want to talk. A big name can turn his head, but he is leaning toward retaining Garrett.
So, where does everything stand at the moment? Where it has stood for several weeks. Garrett is the most likely candidate for the permanent job, but he goes into today's game with the interim label and nothing finalized.
