Like many of you, I first became aware of DirecTV in 1994, when the company provided football fans the opportunity, for the first time ever, to watch every NFL game. For 18-plus years since then, DirecTV has had the exclusive ability to make every game available.

That could soon be ending.

DirecTV CFO Pat Doyle said at a Wednesday investors conference that, if the price goes up too high when the current NFL Sunday Ticket deal expires after the 2014 season, DirecTV would consider “striking a non-exclusive deal with the NFL or possibly even dropping the popular package,” writes the Hollywood Reporter, via SportsBusiness Daily.

The fact that there’s no new deal only two seasons away from expiration of the current contract isn’t a good sign, given that the NFL usually extends these things years in advance. Complicating matters is the fact that the popularity of the RedZone channel, now available via cable, has made the Sunday Ticket package less important to many fans. Also, the availability of every game on NFL Rewind after the fact reduces the attractiveness of features that previously were exclusive to DirecTV.

Thus, with the money going up and the exclusivity being carved away, it’s no surprise that DirecTV is considering passing on the package. The question becomes whether the ability to watch all games would instead be sold to a cable provider — or to multiple cable providers.

Regardless of how it turns out, the fact that there’s no deal less than two years away from the expiration of the current one suggests that change is coming for the way fans purchase the ability to watch any/all Sunday afternoon games.

I would love this.

Currently I pay 58 bucks for Internet and about 125 for my directv.

If it was a cable option I could get it all together for a much better price and save money.

If Directv loses ST, they'll lose thousands of customers. That's the only reason I have their service.

Yeah, me too. I'm thinking of suspending it until football season and go to a streaming only approach. I could buy most of the shows I want to watch on Amazon or iTunes and come out cheaper than paying a monthly DirecTV bill.

You can suspend service for 6 months out of the year.

I already have Fios through Verizon so if they get rights to ST, I'm switching. They're constantly bugging me to add their tv service. 100 bucks for internet, phone, and tv.

I'll gladly pay them for ST with that price for two years.

That sounds like an excellent idea. Not to mention I have netflix also so I can catch most of my shows on there.

I honestly can't see them doing this though. I told an Verizon sales rep if and when they ever get ST, I'll switch.

I pay over 200 a month for Directv's service. They also charge extra for HD service and DVR. Verizon doesn't.

Me three.

ST vanishes then DTV is cancelled in my house unless they make me some unbelievable offer to keep their service.

Anyone know if they plan to renew the ST package price for 199$ again this year or is it being jacked back up.

I was told you'll be able to choose between either package. I personally don't care for the redzone channel just as long as I see Cowboy games in HD. So the 199.00 package suits me just fine.

NFL doesn't give a shit.

They're big enough to run it themselves and I think they're gonna implement live online streaming as a subscription here in the next few years.

Just checked and it seems the 199$ package is now 225$.

When DTV renews it's contract I'm sure that price tag won't take long before it creeps north of 300$ again.

Nah, I'll get it for 199, trust me. I dunno how many times I've threatened to leave them and they keep giving me discounts.

This past year is the first year I went without Directv since maybe 2001 or so. I thought I'd miss NFL Sunday Ticket, but I didn't really. I found a website that would let me watch all the games online. No, its not HD, and yeah it kind of sucks that you have to watch the games on a laptop, but that didn't really even bother me too much. Besides, theres only about 8 games where the Cowboys aren't shown locally here, so it wasn't a big deal overall.

Well, we won't have to worry about switching until 2015. Directv has 2 more years left on their contract with the NFL.

I wasted money on the ST online package.

Used it maybe 2 or 3 times.

It's a fucking waste. I can't believe I got that excited when the online subscription came out. Fucking fantasy football and shit just luring me in to watching as much as I possibly can.

And I have Redzone which makes it worse because Redzone is probably the best thing that's ever been invented and I could get all the fantasy action on that channel.

It's fucking lame you can't just pay for the games you want on a weekly basis. I'd pay like $10-15 per week to see the Cowboys game PPV status. That way I don't have to fucking commit to any sort of contract, if I'm out doing something I won't be wasting money and if I sleep through the first half like I did a couple of times I can decide whether or not to order it.

IIRC this had been discussed a few times, in fact one time I thought I read it was part of some setttlement that DTV and the NFL made with some people.

It does suck that someone cant do this.

Drtv should just DIAF. They know ST is the only thing keeping them in business.

Im canceling my drtv no matter what. I pay like $130 a month and there's literally nothing on TV ever. I'll go to a game or two instead of paying these dicks for 4 months of worthwhile programming.

Netflix and Hulu is taking shit over. . .until they do and drive up prices.
