Because the lockout created the oddity of draft-before-free-agency, the Cowboys felt they could stick to their draft board more than ever because they hadn't filled any needs yet. They said that's a big reason why only two defensive players were taken.

The biggest surprise, Jerry Jones said, was seeing Georgia fullback Shaun Chapas still available with their first of two seventh-round selections.

"We had a big debate a round earlier there about taking him, and he was still there when we got there at the seventh (round)," Jones said.

The Cowboys were believed to have some interest in UConn fullback Anthony Sherman, who went in the fifth round to Arizona. They took Buffalo cornerback Josh Thomas seven picks later and then jumped at Chapas in the seventh round. In their mind, that's pretty good value.

Like their last fullback draftee, Deon Anderson in 2007, Chapas will compete to be a Day 1 starter. Probably bad news for Chris Gronkowski.
