I was wondering about him after Rat got his extension, but unlike Rat's this one was probably a good move. Good for him, good for the team.

The Dallas Cowboys signed tight end Jason Witten to a five-year, $37 million extension that includes $19 million guaranteed, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Witten had two years left on his current deal and he's now under contract with the Cowboys through the 2017 season.

Witten posted news that he had agreed to an extension on this Twitter page Sunday.

"I am blessed to say that I will retire a cowboy!Thx to the jones family, and all the cowboy staff! True honor to put on the star!! #gameday," he wrote.

Witten currently is on his second NFL contract. In 2006 he became the highest-paid tight end when he signed a seven-year $29.5 million deal with $12 million in guarantees.

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins was used in this report.

Are we really only paying the best TE in football 6 mil per season?

We should be ashamed for stealing from his family.

Great, great signing. I like it.

I'm curious how these signings affect next years cap.

That's all Jerry can afford. He'll be on food stamps soon.

Havent seen the details of this one, but all the others they've done gave us a total of 18 mils or so of cap space, which they are saying they will use as a credit on next years cap, essentially wiping out all the dead money from the contracts of the vets we released this yr.

We can definitely be real aggressive next yr.

We shouldn't be.

And I really like this signing. Hell, we've been wasting his talents for 8 years now, so we might as well reward him.

We shouldn't be? We are most likely going to need draft or sign 2 safeties, a NT, CB, ILB, OLB, a swing Tackle, and interior OL. We can probably get 2, maybe 3 immediate contributors from the draft so we will need to be active in Free Agency.

Of course, we've needed the safeties and CB for how long now, and they're not here yet. Just because we have the room I'm not yet convinced Jerry will use it wisely.

You may be right. As much as I dislike Jerry I have to believe that not competing for the Superbowl is driving him crazy. With all of these moves (signings) lately, he may finally be ready to make the necessary moves next year

We havent needed CB's in recent years. Just last yr in preseason people were talking about how our trio or Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick were arguably the best 3-some in the league. Jenkins was regarded as the best young CB in the NFC.

That was the talk, but Newman's been on a bit of a decline the last couple of years. With that and Scandrick being an uncertain commodity another veteran at the position would be very useful.
