Sorry, can't post from my phone, but Laconfora reporting that Dez restructured his contract today. Said it cleared up almost 2 mil in cap space.

Looks like we're gearing up for a fun Tuesday...

Receiver Dez Bryant is one of the players the Cowboys have approached to restructure his contract as the club tries to carve out more space to pursue players in free agency.

Bryant is due a roster bonus of $1.435 million in 2012. The Cowboys would like to convert that to a signing bonus and pro-rate it over the final three years of the contract, lowering Bryant's cap hit by more than $956,000 in '12. The deal is not done yet but the two sides appear to be moving in that direction.

Right tackle Doug Free and cornerback Orlando Scandrick are two other players that can assist the club's effort to upgrade personnel by restructuring their contracts.

After restructures. and releasings...we should have roughly 23 mil to spend. Prob 16-17 after Laurent, Spencer Fiametta and the rookie pool are signed long term.

Because when I see restructure, I always just see it as a means to help the team, and completely forget that it's mutually beneficial for the player, and essentially a transparent transaction to them.

Must be the phrasing. If they were like so-and-so accepted more guaranteed money from the team to free up salary cap room due to the league's insane accounting loopholes everyone would understand that noone is sacrificing anything.

Yeah, one time Aikman re-structured his deal to where he actually took less money so we could make another run. Ever since then, I associate restructuring as a selfless act.

Disregard my earlier props to Dez. Thug.

Clarence hill is saying this did not happen and nothing is imminent with it happening in the future.

Dez Bryant, others can create Cowboys cap space

March, 8, 2012
By Calvin Watkins

The Cowboys haven't restructured any contracts, according to multiple sources. But they can create salary cap space by re-doing the deals of several players.

The Cowboys are roughly $12.5 million under the salary cap, but that will get eaten up quickly with new contracts.

It's written in wide receiver Dez Bryant's contract that the Cowboys can move his $1.4 million roster bonus into a signing bonus to create $957,000 of cap space. The Cowboys have done this in the past with several players.

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick -- who is scheduled to make a base salary of $7.1 million -- can also get that moved to signing bonus money to create cap space. Right tackle Doug Free is in the same situation. He's supposed to make $6 million in base salary in 2012, but that can be changed.

If the Cowboys move Free's and Scandrick's money around, that would lower their salary cap figures and create $8.6 million in room.

The team can also create cap space by cutting veteran cornerback Terence Newman. Newman has a base salary of $6.016 million but if he's released before Tuesday (the start of the league year), it would save $4 million. If Newman is cut on or after Tuesday, Cowboys officials can designate him a post-June 1 cap casualty, which frees up $6 million in cap space.

Nothing has happened yet, but these are the options the Cowboys have heading into the start of free agency March 13.

I can't believe we're paying Scandrick $7.1 million to chase people. That's what he does.

Wow that article is basically saying we will have 28 mil in space when it's all said and done.

Not to mention we will have 28 mil coming off the books next year and the 10 mil cap increase.
