Wide receiver Dez Bryant , the first-round draft choice, caught his first NFL touchdown pass in the Minnesota loss. He also snuffed out the Cowboys' last chance at a comeback with a drop.
On third-and-5 from the Cowboys' 25, Bryant could not handle a quick throw from quarterback Tony Romo. Had Bryant made the catch, the Cowboys would have had a first down at about their 32 with 2:42 remaining. Because of the drop, they had to punt and did not re-gain the ball until only 13 seconds remained.
Bryant said the ball got to him quicker than expected but added that he should have made the catch because Romo made an exact throw.
"I should have made a play, because that's why they brought me here," he said.
Bryant said his right ankle, injured during training camp, continues to cause "very minor" pain. The pain caused him to miss two days of practice last week.
Briefly: Romo has a bruised thumb on his left, non-throwing hand. Phillips indicated Romo will not miss practice time this week. ... The Cowboys brought back offensive tackle Robert Brewster for the practice squad. Brewster, a third-round pick in the 2009 draft, was dropped from the 53-man roster on Friday to make room for receiver-special teams player Jesse Holley . ... Bryant has stalled as a punt returner. He gained only three yards in two returns against Minnesota and has averaged only 2.4 yards on eight tries since his scoring return against Chicago.
