Dez Bryant making plays, but also showing rawness; Phillips: 'He's learning as he goes'

Rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant showed more of his skills with four catches for 50 yards against Houston. His rawness also showed.

In the second quarter, Bryant ran a pattern to the outside of cornerback Kareem Jackson instead of breaking to the inside, as coverage dictated. That allowed Jackson to shove Bryant out of bounds, making him ineligible to catch the football. In college, a receiver can return to make a catch when he is pushed out.

Bryant, who said he knew the NFL rule, went through with the play and had a superb 37-yard catch and run for what would have been a touchdown. Instead, the Cowboys were penalized for an illegal touch of a pass.

In last week's loss to Chicago, Bryant did the opposite, going to the inside when he should have headed outside.

"He's learning as he goes," Wade Phillips said.

Rookie mistakes extrapolated by him not playing a live game in such a long period of time.

He keeps catching the ball, mistakes can slide to an extent. He is gonna be a good one.

But I don't tbhink those mistake sare hurting the team by any stretch.

Well . . . they are. The illegal touching pushed us back 5 yards. I'm not sure what the result was on the Bears game play.

These are to be expected though.

The correct call, which should of been called, was illegal contact by the Texans db after 5 yrds. Which, IMO is a stupid ass rule in the first place. But, Bryant needs to remember to gain inside domain at that point.

I agree, they got that play wrong big time. I can't really fault him on that play as he was contacted after 5 yards and thats a penalty.

I cannot find the rule anywhere, if Dez was pushed OOB (the Texans' radio crew said he was pushed out) does he become eligible when he gets back in bounds? I thought that was the case and that is again what the Texans' radio crew said.

Once he is knocked out of bounds, he can't be the first one to touch the ball upon re entering. On Punt returns, the gunner that gets beat up by two guys blocking and gets pushed out of bounds, has to immediately can't back onto the field, or he can be called for a penalty.

Dez's mistake was not taking an inside route, once the db was committed to forcing him out.

Yup, once you are pushed out of bounds you can't be the first to touch the ball.

It's a shitty rule, but hey.

But that at the same time should have been illegal contact, becuase it looked like Dez was already beyond 5 yards when he got shoved out of bounds.

He was, and it should of been called. But, wasn't. Refs botched calls on Both sides in that game.

LOL!!! Funny as to how they sat there and watched him get knocked out of bounds when he was beyond more than 5 yards of the LOS, and yet they instead call him for catching the ball after he went out of bounds. Now how in the fuck you sit there and watch him go out of bounds and not xclal the manner in which he was knocked out of bounds?

It seems like every year the refs get worse and worse.

There are too many ticky tacky penalties and rules in the game now. Refs seem to be overwhelmed. And also, take the authority they posess during gametime to the head a little bit.

Somebody should tell them they are part time pukes in a zebra costume, call the legit, obvious shit and leave the game alone.

I wouldn't even have too much of a problem with the ticky-tack calls IF they called it both ways. They seem during the course of a game to call it more on other teams, like the Cowboys for instance.

Take for instance how Tauscher the RT of the Packers got all of those holding calls against the Peppers? He was doing that same shit last year against the Cowboys, and no calls. I expect much of the same when we return to Green Bay this year.

Do you think that just maybe you see it that way because you're a Cowboys fan?

Is that possible?
