Dez Bryant: 'Impressive' so far but has 'a lot of steps to take'

Like any rookie, Dallas Cowboys' wide receiver Dez Bryant is going through a learning process. The curve is steeper for Bryant because he missed much of training camp and all five exhibiton games because of a high ankle sprain.

Despite that, Bryant has at least 50 yards in receptions in each of the club's three games. That is a significant accomplishment, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said.

``He's got a lot of steps to take,'' Garrett said. ``He's transitioned well for a guy who missed most of training camp. To be able to perform as well as he has been very impressive.''

Garrett said Bryant needs to continue refining his route-running abilities while expanding his understanding of the offense. Bryant has not been intimidated by this level of play, Garrett said.

``He's not bothered by game situations,'' Garrett said. ``He embraces them. He loves to play, and he can make plays. We've tried to give him an opportunity to do that, and he has stepped up and responded.''

My favorite attribute of Dez isn't his all world ability. It's his desire. The guy would run through a wall to get to the end zone. And he doesn't give two shats about who's supposed to be covering him. He owns that football, you're just standing on his field.

The NFL is just the next level to dominate.

I love that about him. It should help him become a great player.

Now on the flip side, I worry about his intelligence. He doesn't seem like he's all there. I think we'll need to keep close tabs on him and make sure he's not being influenced by the wrong people.

Like, say, his Mother....for instance.

I hate to always compare him to Irvin, but he has the same drive that he had when he played.

He hasn't really shown himself yet, but when he does I really think he'll breakout and be like Michael was.

He has some similarities to Michael.

I think by next year he'll be there, maybe the year after for sure.

He just needs to get his route running down and learn the rest of the playbook.

Well that all comes with time and I thought he had the play book down, probably just some chemistry with Romo they gotta work on...

He was the Mike in Mike and the Mad Dogg on WFAN. He's also Parcells' buddy.

I've said it since he's been here and only Dallas fans seem to have a problem with it. He's a better WR than Miles Austin. Miles will be the compliment, not the other way around.

And this is coming from one of the few people who had any faith in Austin when he got here. 95% of this fan base currently swinging from his nut sack killed him two years ago for his supposedly awful hands. It wasn't good enough for the NFL.

There's no doubt in my mind that Dez and Miles will be our 1 and 2 receivers in the future, and the way Roy is playing lately we have the best trio going.

Sort of reminds me of the days of Tony Hill, Drew Pearson, and Butch Johnson.

Roy costs too much and will be gone for sure after 2 years, maybe next year.

We only need and can only afford Dez and Miles. Between Hurd, O-Tree and Manny we should be fine at the #3 and #4 slots.

From what I've seen of Dez Bryant, both in college and w/the Boys,he's going to be the man.A manly man.

I don't believe there are too many,if any, opposing corners and safeties who can bump, press or otherwise intimidate him.

He has amazing hands, and a pretty good grasp of what the route should be.

And,he's a rookie.

He's only going to get better.

Holy shit.

That is why I can forgive Jones for passing up on Oline. But all that you just posted, add to it that he is fulfilling his dream of playing for the hometown team of the Cowboys. The guy literally broke down at his draft party when he got that call.

I think 2008 was supposed to be Austin's breakout season, but he seemed to stay injured most of the season (though they were minor injuries). The addition of Roy Williams half way through the season also hurt him. My main concern then was having three unproven WRs on the roster. Austin, Hurd and Stanback were getting a lot of hype but none were producing. Stanback was the one I wanted gone because of his constant injuries but I was prepared to give Austin and Hurd one more season to solidify their roles. Hurd seems like a perpetual #4/ special teamer and I'm surprised we've hept him around this long.

As for Bryant, I like him but I'm not about to make any bold predictions. I didn't want to draft him at first but he really has grown on me.
