Only months ago, DeMarcus Ware was hunting quarterbacks in the plush surroundings of Cowboys Stadium. Now, he spends his days at a shuttered Hummer dealership in Grapevine. But Ware hasn't fallen on hard times. He's here by choice. Ware is working out this offseason at a gym he created on the same site where those gas-guzzling SUVs were once repaired and sold.
"We've probably got some of the best weight-lifting equipment around the league in there, including free-motion weights which a guy donated, ropes and a device called 'The Flipper' which simulates a tire that you can flip," Ware told Dennis Dillon in a Sporting News article detailing his daily routine during the work stoppage. "It's a really exclusive gym. You won't find another one like it."
Apparently many of his teammates agree. Among those who have stopped by and worked out with Ware are defensive end Stephen Bowen, fullback Chris Gronkowski, offensive tackle Robert Brewster as well as fellow linebackers Brandon Williams, Victor Butler and Anthony Spencer.
"I'm not really worried about staying in condition myself," said Ware, who has been invited to the Pro Bowl the last five seasons. "I'm more worried about making sure that all of the team stays ready and comes in in condition and ready to go once the lockout is lifted. I told them they could work out for free for the first month. After that, they've got to start paying monthly dues. Hey, I've got to pay rent, you know?"
