When it comes to rehabilitating his injured right ankle, DeMarco Murray says he's ahead of schedule. The Cowboys star rookie running back had his season ended on Dec. 11 after fracturing his ankle in a 37-34 loss to the visiting New York Giants.
"I've been working hard to strengthen my ankle," Murray said recently in an interview with FOXSports.com. "I'm definitely ahead of schedule. I think I start running on [Feb. 6] actually, so I'm excited to get back there."
Murray, who was in Indianapolis for the Super Bowl, said he has stayed in Dallas since having surgery in December, working on getting back to full strength.
It's realistic to believe that the Cowboys could've made the playoffs had it not been for the injury to the third round pick that rushed for 799 yards in his first seven games as the team's starting back.
So other than being healthy, what do the Cowboys need to do to get into the playoffs next season?
"Just finishing," Murray said. "We were a young team this year. We had a lot of young guys, offensively and defensively. Just missing OTAs and all that extra stuff with a new coaching staff. We're looking forward to this training camp, having a full season under our belt. Like I said, there's a lot of great things in the near future for the Dallas Cowboys. We're excited about the team we have."
And while few would complain about how he performed in his first NFL season, Murray did mention one area where he needs to show improvement.
"I did a great job of catching the ball at Oklahoma and I feel I kind of took a step back this year," Murray said. "I had a drop or two in the year. And just reading the defenses a little better. They disguise it so well, the blitzes. And that's something that the more film I watch, the more comfortable I am back there, I'll get better as time comes."
