Deion Sanders joined the Ben and Skin radio show on Friday and talked about what the Cowboys need to do to improve their defense. Here are a few highlights.
On what the Cowboys should do defensively:
"I don't know the contract situation for Mike Zimmer, but you need to go get him. I don't know what it looks like over in Cincinnati, go get him. Go get somebody who can really take control and run this defense the way they need it to be run. ... He's the guy for the job. But I think he just signed a new deal last year. But he's the guy for the job. A guy of that status that commands respect from a team that has no nonsense. He's not going to tolerate blowing coverages and just not giving effort. He's just not going to tolerate that. I don't think the Cowboys are going to tolerate that anymore either. First of all, they're not that far off. To me this is a good team, they just underachieved. So, they're not that far off."
On his opinion of the secondary:
"Some of them are front-runners. What I mean by that is when it's going good, they're going good. When it's going bad, they're bad, they tap. It's not all of them. Some guys are not leaders. Some guys are followers. You need to put a leader in the bunch. There is no Troy Polamalu or Ed Reed's laying around. You can't find those guys. That's why they are so valuable. That's why they are handsomely paid. You can't find those guys. But you can darn near locate what's close to them. Everybody don't need a Louis (Vuitton) bag. Somebody has to get a knock-off. Get a knock-off. You got to get a knock-off. It may not say Gucci, it may say Oucci. But go get it. Go get something close to it. ... We understand the secondary, it's atrocious."
On the linebackers being the group that needs the least amount of work:
"That's not true. I would say defensive lineman and linebackers because if you give me some heat, I can cover a little better. I'm not talking about Prime (himself) when I say I. The secondary can cover better when you have some heat. If you have some guys that can cover, the lineman feel they can rush a little better. It's a two-fold situation. But you got to give me some linebackers that can do both, support the run, as well as cover."
