Tight End Released
Rucker Waived To Make Room For CB
Josh Ellis
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas - With tight end Martellus Bennett expecting to return to practice this week, the Cowboys trimmed that position on Tuesday by releasing Martin Rucker, allowing them to bolster their depth at another spot.

Signed was eight-year veteran cornerback Frank Walker, who had been with Tennessee during training camp this season but was released on final cuts. Rucker, who appeared to be stuck behind a logjam at tight end in training camp, had a path cleared for him to make the roster when Bennett suffered a high ankle sprain against Minnesota in the preseason dress rehearsal. He had caught nine passes for 107 yards in exhibition play, adding a two-point conversion to beat the Broncos in the exhibition opener.

A fourth-round pick of Cleveland in 2008 following an All-America senior season at Missouri, Rucker also spent time with Philadelphia before being signed by the Cowboys in training camp last year. He was on the team's practice squad for most of 2010, but was called up to appear in the final five games of the season.

The Cowboys needed to add numbers to the cornerback position with Orlando Scandrick likely to miss several weeks with an ankle injury. Terence Newman could return from his groin injury this week, but fellow starter Mike Jenkins has been banged up as well, and was forced to leave Sunday's season opener several times.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Giants (207th overall) in 2003, Walker played four seasons in New York, starting nine games. He was with Green Bay in 2007, and played for Baltimore in 2008 and '09, starting six more. He had two starts in 11 appearances for Minnesota last year.

A 5-11, 200-pounder from Tuskegee, the 30-year old Walker has eight career interceptions.

From Clarence Hill, FWST:

Cowboys sign CB Frank Walker for depth purposes and insurance
The Dallas Cowboys signed cornerback Frank Walker to the roster Tuesday to help shore up a position decimated by injuries.
Orlando Scandrick is out with as sprained ankle and Terence Newman is still day to day with a groin injury that kept him out the opener and the entire preseason..
Walker was originally drafted in the sixth round (207th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft by the N.Y. Giants out of Tuskegee. He has started 17-of-93 games in his eight year career.
Walker played his first four years with the Giants, where he also played with Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, then signed with Green Bay for one season (2007), Baltimore for two (2008-09) and with Minnesota in 2010.
He has recorded 129 tackles, eight interceptions, 31 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

The Dallas Cowboys released the following two players:
LB/FB Isaiah Greenhouse (from practice squad)
TE Martin Rucker

Clarence HIll Jr.

I'm guessing Rob probably spoke with his bro about him too. Rex was his DC in Baltimore in 2008/2009

Rob: "Hey, Rexy, Frank Walker?"

Rex: "Hey, Robby, yeah I coached him."

Rob: "Good talk, man, Tony Romo is an asshole."

Injuries forced their hand but we go from the cuff of almost signing Asomugha at the start of FA to our fall back plan of Frank Walker. Really........? Was there no middle ground we could have addressed after the Asomugha deal fell through? Instead we are in the predicament we are in now which is scraping the bottom of the barrel out of desperation.

Is Butler that untrustworthy that we couldn't just bring him up over a jag who has been on like 20 teams in 9 years? We are trusting other rookies, what's one more.

I would've preferred Butler moving up, but I'll take the coaching staffs opinion over ours.

We should've signed Hansen from Philly when he was released and available for four days. He's a good slot guy.

Lito Shepherd is also available.

What I've read on Walker indicates that he's got great measureables, so he always does well during work outs, but that he's a penalty machine.

He played for Rex two years in baltimore, I'm sure that had some impact on the decision. Rob and Garrett probably talked to him about the guy.
