Busy, whirlwind day for sure. Only one pick that I thought was a head scratcher but the others all made sense and we got value at a number of these picks.

4a) DE Dorance Aarmstrong, Kansas: Played on an awful team with no other real defensive talent, put up a big time JR yr before tailing off some last yr. Has real pass rush ability. Tyrone Crawford is your RDE today, and IMO wont be on the roster after this season. Demarcus Lawrence is a free agent again after this yr, and franchising him would cost around 20 mils. Taco looks more like a LDE than a true RDE. If Armstrong develops in a yr or so maybe you can save a mega contract from Lawrence. While there's talk of Gregory being reinstated, we all know how this might play out (ie, bad).

4b) TE Dalton Schultz, Stanford: Was hoping we'd look at this guy because of how well Stanford TE's are coached and acclimate to the NFL. Is regarded as a strong blocker and David Shaw just raved about the guy today.

5) QB Mike White, Western Kentucky: I think everyone is going to end up loving this kid. Good sized kid with a nice arm and ability to throw downfield. Also regarded as elite film study kid and very football smart.

6a) Traded for Tavon Austin. The best part of the Tavon Austin deal is he keeps that flub Lance Dunbar off the team, as they are reportedly moving him to RB/3rd down back type roll. It was revealed today on Cowboys draft show Dunbar was worked out by coaches this week and might have been signed Monday. Austin is a bust for the Rams and I doubt he does much here either, but if he is good on returns and provides a few plays on jet sweeps or bubbles screens its a low risk investment that could pay off.

6b) LB Chris Covington, Indiana: I don't know anything about this kid, seems like a head scratcher pick and most likely a special teamer at best. The one pick during these 3 days that didn't seem to make a lot of sense, but maybe he will prove me wrong.

6c) WR Cedric Wilson, Boise SR: Really liked this pick and has a knack for big plays over the top of a defense. Hands catcher who tracks ball well and has some RAC skills, as well as return ability.

7) Bo Scarbrough RB, Alabama: Loved this pick too. Big, physical kid who can be a really good backup for Zeke. Had times at Alabama where he dominated games when he came in.

Trade: Ryan Switzer for Raiders DL Jihad Ward: While I would have liked to see Switzer get another year, Ward was a DL we really liked a couple years ago and they should have a good idea how he fits and what he can do here, because he played for Lovie Smith at Illinois. We'll play him inside at DT, and we had a need there. Kid is still growing too at nearly 6'6, around 300lbs.

Another note on Armstrong I saw after watching the ESPN clips of our picks today, he played most of the year on a partially torn ACL.

When I watched what I could find on him he looked like a decent penetrator and had some slipperyness getting off blocks. Pass rushers and QBs are basically lottery tickets, most dont get cashed but I never really complain about drafting them unless I know for a fact they cant play. We'll see on this guy.

Run dominant offenses need TEs that can block. This guy can because that is what they do at Stanford. He'll make the team and probably play a lot.

Lottery ticket. Even if all it ammounts to is a capable backup I'll be happy.

My problem with this is two fold: 1) If McVay cant get anything out of him I seriously doubt Linehan will. McVay coached circles around Linehan last year. 2) What his cap cost? You mean to tell me some combination of Beasley or whatever scat back they drafted couldnt do the same with some combination what was on the roster or mid to late draft picks for a fraction of the price? The fascination with the scat back and inability to use it reminds of the typical more money than brains douche bag who buys a Ferrari but never learns to drive a stick.

Looks like special teams fodder. Thought I read he was a QB in HS but had some fairly impressive stats at IU last season.

6c) WR Cedric Wilson, Boise SR: Really liked this pick and has a knack for big plays over the top of a defense. Hands catcher who tracks ball well and has some RAC skills, as well as return ability.
Depends on the numbers game at WR and who excels in Oxnard. The team has a propensity toward Boise St players for whatever reason OTOH it is not like he has a bunch of world beaters to leap frog to make the roster. Best chance still maybe PS.

7) Bo Scarbrough RB, Alabama: Loved this pick too. Big, physical kid who can be a really good backup for Zeke. Had times at Alabama where he dominated games when he came in.
So here is where things get kind of interesting. Supposedly Austin is going to be the change of pace RB but not being particularly productive he is also kind of a china doll. Scarborough is the exact opposite and I seem to remember scouts thinking he was the next great Alabama RB but the career seemed to fall off, maybe because of inconsistent QB play and teams keying on the run. In any case I think he makes the roster plays a series or two every Sunday and is productive. Best part is he comes dirt cheap. He is like the $30 rent a car you abuse and turn in and just get new one.

This a head scratcher for me. Oakland was bad on the D Line last year couldnt stop the run and yet for some reason was willing to trade this guy for a gadget slot receiver. Yeah Oaklands coaching staff were basically guys that were willing to work cheap and not able to get better jobs, but does anybody really think Marinelli on his last legs is gonna get the best out of this guy?

Austin is the new Lucky Whitehead (reverses, jet sweeps and kick returns). I doubt he does jack squat as a receiver.

He got hurt and hardly played in 2017, and Gruden's DC isn't going to run the same scheme they were doing when he was drafted. As a rookie he came along as that season progressed, then got hurt and didn't play much last yr.

I strongly suspect our former ST coach Bisaccia pushed for the trade by the way.
