Been watching this team since 1975, and last night was one of the all time worst games I've ever seen them play. Sure there were games more lopsided on the scoreboard, but other than seasons when we were completely over matched on the field from a talent standpoint (ie, like 1988, 1989, Campo years) this was as disparaging a loss as I can remember.
1) I know a few people seem to compare this game to that Green Bay debacle last yr, but I dont. This is worse. The team quit last year on Wade because he as so utterly clueless. The team didnt quit last night, they just got mauled.
2) I mentioned this last night, but as much as I like Garrett I dont know if he can survive many more games like this, what with how a couple other games have panned out already. The team never looked remotely interested in the game from snap one, in any phase. They looked painfully slow on both sides of the ball, like they were stuck in the mud or something. This game was a massive failure in their first really big game under Garrett. Firing a coach after only a season and a half seems unthinkable, but the fans will turn on this team quickly, especially after efforts like last night. Being on the road the last two games might be a good thing for Garrett, as Jones wont have to see a half empty stadium.
3) In regards to above, the next 5 games are probably critical. The schedule appears about as easy as it can get. If they dont go 4-1 and fall out of contention, Jones might have no choice but to talk to some of the other big names available as HC. And no, that doesnt include Rob Ryan. He wants so badly to be a HC, but I guarantee you nobody is going to interview him if they have another effort or two defensively like last night.
4) Probably bad news on the injury front again with Lee, Jenkins and McBriar all going down and not coming back. Losing a punter normally wouldnt be a big deal, but McBriar is so good that it will definitely hurt. Lee and Jenkins were both having excellent seasons. I figure Jenkins will be gone 2-4 weeks with that hamstring thing. Lee reportedly suffered a sprain, but will undergo more testing today. If the wrist is fractured in anyway he might be gone for the year. With the way this season has gone with injuries, I wouldnt be surprised if all 3 of them are done for some time.
5) Dallas barely controlled the ball for one quarter of the game (17:09). They gave up almost 500 yards and 31 first downs. They gave up an incredible 20 first downs in the first half alone. The Eagles ran through holes over and over that you could have drove a truck through, in route to 239 yards on the ground. The really ugly thing is they did all they did offensively with no play longer than 34 yards. The Eagles averaged over 7yds per PLAY, and it wasnt skewed by a bunch of big plays. At one point in the first half the Eagles were averaging nearly a first down on EVERY PLAY. Rob Ryan put together an awful game plan, and they stuck with doing the same thing that wasnt working the entire 60 minutes. The defense yielded scores on the first 6 possessions, and 3 consecutive drives had 11+ plays. We didnt force a single 3 and out and they didnt punt until the 4th quarter. The tackling had been pretty good all year, until last night. It was atrocious.
6) The offense wasnt any better. We managed only 12 first downs and only 3/10 on 3rd down. If we could have stayed in the game we could have piled up some big numbers rushing, but when you cant convert on 3rd down and keep getting further and further behind, the run game becomes a non factor. Murray had 74 yds on 8 carries. Tanner had a couple of nice catch and runs and Robinson stood out again. Otherwise, the offense was a lost cause. Costa appeared to have another bad game and it wont surpise me if he's replaced next week.
7) Considering how they chose to game plan this game defensively, deactivating Josh Brent seems even more pathetically stupid now than when it was first announced. They banked on being able to stop the run with 6 or 7 guys up front and he's clearly the biggest, most physical DL on the team. They chose to deactivate him because they said he was the slowest DL and would be a liability chasing Vick around. Brent is a very good player vs the run, and they missed him badly. The other thing thats perplexing is after seeing Keith Brooking play some of the worst football an ILB in the 3-4 has ever played last night, they gave their rookie 2nd round pick NO snaps on defense, even once the game was completely out of hand. Why? What possible good could that accomplish, especially considering your star ILB was already injured and may miss some games (if not the rest of the season) Brooking's game was just horrendous and if they cut him today, nobody would sign the guy. He's washed up.
8) In regards to the offense, after 7 games I am about this <> close to believing we've seen the better days of Tony Romo, for good. He threw the ball about as poorly as I've seen from him last night. Forget about getting timid and basically not even looking downfield. Thats fine if you are throwing the ball accurately underneath. He didnt. He threw the ball awful. Alot of his throws had no chance. He also had that same "ho hum" look on his face the whole game, like he'd have rather been somewhere else all along. He wasnt the only one, but he's supposed to be a leader here. This is supposed to be HIS team. I was really excited thinking about what he might do this yr, after seeing Jon Kitna play so well last year with a far less supporting cast and a downright terrible OL. Kitna would be an upgrade over Romo right now. I even wonder if McGee might be. I hope some of its the injury, because if it isnt we're probably sunk as a franchise if they are sticking with him for the foreseable future.
9) We'd have lost anyway, but the int on the throw to Bennett basically sealed our doom last night. Looked like he could have caught it, but it also looked like Romo underthrew it slightly too. We were down 14-0, they scored on that drive and made it 21-0, essentially ending the game.
10) No wonder Nmadi Asoumougha has so much success covering WR's. If I could line up and get away with the type of interference and holding he got away with, I could probably cover some people too. Cant believe that PI wasnt called in the endzone on Bryant. And that wasnt the only play.
11) DeMarcus Ware was credited for 11 tackles, 4 sacks and 5 tackles for loss (4 of those are the sacks). He was credited for 4 hits on the QB. Amazing game for him, the only guy who showed up. The remainder of the defense was credited with NO hits on the QB. Anthony Spencer was a no show again and as mentioned above, Keith Brooking played one of the worst games I have ever seen a guy play.
12) I was all pumped up for this week. The Seattle game is going to be my first at the new stadium, and of course they are having new Ring of Honor inductions too. Kind of deflating to see what we saw last night. After this effort last night, I really wont be all that surprised if we lose this (Seattle) game.
Absolutely nothing positive from last night. I figure they need to finish at least 10-6 to make the playoffs, and that seems unlikely considering how hard it is for them to even win two games in a row, let alone win 7 of the last 9.
