Same Shit Different Year. Pretty much sums it up.
1) Prescott played well, about as well as any rookie 4th rd pick thrown into the fire in week one could be expected to play. Unfortunately he didnt get enough help from the rest of the team. Beasley dropped a gimmee TD. Dez had a tough TD grab that he didnt come up with, but both of these are plays guys need to make if ou are going to win with a rookie QB. I thought he looked solid though and it gets more apparent every time he goes out that he isnt a fluke. He definitely appears to be the QB of the future here.
2) Tough debut for Zeke. He ran hard and got the yards he could get, had a nice TD run. But got stonewalled by the G Men stacked and blitzing fronts too much. The Giants had clearly went in wth the gameplan that anyone else other than Elliott was going to beat them and they executed that plan pretty well.
3) This OL continues to get high praise across the board from all angles, but they did not have a strong game yesterday IMO. I know its tought to open creases against 8 and 9 man fronts, but Doug Free looked like he was on skates on several plays and got drove back into the backfield too much, and Lael Collins had a bad game too. I'm wondering how much more rope they give Collins before they go back to Leary. I was thinking with what he showed last year he'd easily come in and take the next step this year, but he seemed to struggle to me. Tyron Smith aggravted his stinger and missed a couple series or so and Chaz Green played pretty well while he was out. If Free continues to struggle, I wonder how long it'll be before Green starts taking some snaps, if not his job.
4) Key moments with obvious passing situation late in the game, and the coaches believe Lance Dunbar is more of a threat than Brice Butler? The guy had a superb training camp and preseason and was rewarded with playing probably 10 snaps or something. He got open when he was on the field and has true deep speed. The undying loyalty the coaches on this team have for certain players (Dunbar, Wilbur, Free, Church, Wilcox and yes, even Witten is part of the problem with why we never get better as a team.
5) Really disappointing that late in the game, the run defense collapses yet again and lets the Giants (bad OL and all) chew up chunks of yardage and clock because they cant stop a middle run play. The defense was hardly on the field most of the game and yet in the end, the Giants D didnt appeared gassed at all and we appeared dead in the water. Other than Lee, not one of those LB's we trotted out yesterday was worth a crap. The DT's were decent most of the game but couldnt get the key stop at the end despite pretty much knowing what the Giants were going to do. DL as a whole didnt offer much pass rush entiure game, even on longer routes the Giants ran.
6) Not much else to say about T Williams not getting ut of bounds that hasnt already been said. Realy disappointing he made a mistake that only rookies would maybe be expected to make. I dont know if Bailey would ahve made the long FG anyway, but at least he'd have had a chance.
7) Speaking of Bailey, other than Prescott he was really the only guy I thought stood out positively for us yesterday. He is the best kicker in the league without question I think.
8) My only real qualm with the refs was missing the fairly obvious offensive PI in the end zone on that Victor Cruz TD. I know they dont call the pick plays every time (and probably cant) bt that one was so obvious that it probably should have been called.
Disappointing loss that looked almost exactly like all the games last yr, save the bad QB play. We didnt lose the game because of Prescott and going in I think many would have expected a loss BECAUSE of us having to start a rookie 4th rd pick. Thats a tribute to him, his work ethic and his talent. At some point Jones & Jones just have to come to the conclusion that Garrett is NOT a winner. He will NEVER be a winner. The team is going to be stuck in mediocrity forever as long as he stays here. Last night the Patriots went on the road to one of the strong favorites to go to the super bowl without Tom Brady, without Gronkoski and having traded their best defensive player last yr to the Cardinals, and they WON the game. Belichick and other good coaches constantly find ways to win when the chips are down, while our fool constantly finds ways to lose. The worst part is when players make mistakes to cost us games, those guys never lose their jobs. The whole organization accepts mediocrity and "well we only lost by 1pt, so its better than last yr" mentality.
Frankly after what we saw yesterday I'll be surprised if we win more than two games before the bye week, and even that might be a stretch.
