So it's not exactly the day after, but I was on the road.
We got about what I expected after it was announced most of the offensive starters wouldn't play. Terrible offensive night, with great defense on our end save one bad play by the scrubs. Again I don't care that we lost, but it does bother me that a team could look so inept offensively, even if it was the backup players.
1) On the good side, the starting D and main rotation guys continue to look really, really good, if not dominant. Starters have yielded no points in 3 preseason game, and very few first downs. While they don't have a lot of sacks they are getting great pressure on the QB and if the key guys all stay healthy I suspect 50+ sacks is possible this year. The LB corp looks really good too (first time we could honestly say that in a long time).
2) It's not real games obviously, but the starting CB duo of Awuzie and Jones looks really good too. These guys are blanketing everyone and making plays on the ball. I thought Lewis and Brown both had their best preseason games the other night as well, especially Lewis.
3) Mike White had the one pick (although it appeared some of the blame could have been on the WR too) but otherwise he had by far his best game and did show some quality arm talent and accuracy. It might take him 2 seasons or so to develop, but he has some ability. (Unlike Cooper Rush, see below)
4) I like our backup LB's quite a bit. Joe Thomas has impressed in every preseason game to the point that if he had to start at one of the OLB spots, I wouldn't be all that worried. Justin March-Lillard is also interesting. He had a team high 9 tackles the other night and really shows a lot of range. Might not ever be a guy you'd want starting but capable backup and good special teams guy. It was the first time we saw much of late rd pick Chris Covington but he also appeared to play well and he had a couple of big hits too (incl one on ST, which is where he would have to shine to make the team)
5) Joe Looney played decent at C and I thought Connor Williams had his best game yet too. Edwards missed a couple of blitz assignments it appeared but his blocking wasn't horrible, though I don't have any confidence he could be a legit starter if either Martin or Williams were out, especially if it were more than a game or two.
6) First game action for Cole Beasley, and he looked really good on short/intermediate and even deep stuff.
7) I almost don't want to say anything because if he gets suspended again it will really suck, but Randy Gregory does look like a potential real difference maker. He looks really good, both he and Lawrence beat the Cards T's with ease several times.
8) One of the best things about the game was seeing Kris Richard melt down on the sideline after the scrubs yielded that long TD run. This type of intensity has been sorely lacking from this franchise for years. I really wish this guy was the HC instead of the clapping clown.
Tons of bad or ugly:
1) The backup OL is just pathetic, maybe the worst it's ever been. It's unfortunate Marcus Martin got hurt, but that doesn't excuse the dumpster fire that is Chaz Green and it also doesn't alleviate concerns now over Cam Fleming. I knew Green was bad, but Fleming struggled again the other night and gave up a couple of hits and a sack on the QB against scrubs. Chaz Green followed up epic lousy efforts in the first two games with an even lousier effort Sunday night. Dude is just one of the worst players ever to wear our uniform and the fact that these fucktard coaches continue to roll him out there is mind boggling. he almost single handedly cripples the offense as he cant pass or run block worth anything. The backup C to Looney appeared to be seriously injured in the game too. Needless to say, they likely need a new backup C/G and even swing tackle cant be ruled out with Fleming struggling.
2) I'm sure these coaches wont do it, but Cooper Rush should not be the #2 on this team. He has had a poor preseason and he looked awful Sunday night. His two interceptions were horrible throws, the one that ended up the pick 6 appeared to take 3 hours to get to the sideline because his arm is so weak. Rush also badly missed Beasley for an easy TD or long gainer (2nd time this preseason he badly missed an open guy long) Mike White has some developmental talent but he should be the #3 guy this year. They really need to make a move at backup QB.
3) 8 turnovers in a game? Now granted, the backup OL deserves some blame, but Lance Lenoir pissed the bed last preseason returning punts, and he pissed the bed again Sunday night. He's a total 50/50 guy catching the ball (and despite clapping fools excuse for Lenoir on the Byron Jones play, that appeared to me to be one the punt returner should have just got away from). Cooper Rush's two picks were 100% proof of why this guy shouldn't be more than a clipboard carrying 3rd string or practice squader. Add in 11 accepted penalties and a total failure of OL blocking ability, and we witnessed another Red Goober coaching masterpiece.
4) Did anyone ask the Clapping Turdpile why he decided to kick a FG in a 27-0 game with less than a minute to go? What was the purpose? And if it was to get potentially valuable special teams work in, why do that with the backup kicker at that point? Wouldn't having Bailey and the guys who would be doing that in live games that count make more sense?
5) Why didn't these boobs give rookie WR Michael Gallup more reps the other night? He's been really impressive and even beat Patrick Peterson deep.
6) No backup safeties to speak of, all those guys they trotted out were awful.
7) Real offensive strategy by Red Goober: Take the two smallest WR's on the team (Austin and Beasley) and motion them in towards the end of the OL, using both as in-line type blockers on a run play. Yes, we really saw that in this game. And yes, the results were predictable.
They need to go out and do some pretty significant end of the roster retooling, and I do think they should pursue a veteran safety to start next to Heath (Earl Thomas if the price is right). I also think they need to get 1 or 2 backup OL (probably two), and need to at least find a blocking TE, because none of the guys they have is any good at that. Backup QB should be a priority too, though I have my doubts it will be.
I think if they shored up the backup OL spots at a minimum, there's definitely enough talent here to make a real run at a postseason spot, but horrible coaching by Garrett will probably be the downfall. Dude is just as bad at HC as Chaz Green at OL.
