I stopped writing this a year or so ago, like many the repeated failure year after year after year had worn me out, and it was a waste of time to do them. Every week and every season was like the movie groundhog day.
Now that the day we all waited for has come, I'll be motivated to do these again and yes, homering out for awhile is going to be part of the theme. I think we are ALL entitled to a little homering for once because we finally have at least SOME hope for something different.
1) What a bizarre end to the loser Garrett's time here. We all sat by watching last week scratching our heads and puzzled over what they could possibly be doing. Fast forward to yesterday, and we find out Garrett spent the entire week basically BEGGING the Jones' to give him another chance. One report even said the Jones' told Garrett last Monday he wouldn't be brought back, and yet he still showed up every day, asked for meetings, asked to talk to players and assistants and all the while, was pleading with the Jones to give him one more chance. Needless to say, I've never heard anything like this, and I bet in my lifetime we won't see anything like it again.
2) I guess some question why they hired McCarthy so fast, but they apparently did do SOME due diligence on some other names (like Urban Meyer) and determined they weren't getting him. McCarthy had already had 3 interviews (Carolina, NYG and Cleveland) and apparently impressed the Giants. If your a team looking for a new HC and you are super impressed with the person you are talking to, it's probably smart to move forward as quick as you can rather than risk losing him to another organization.
3) I have no idea whether he'll win big here or not, but as I mentioned in another thread I do think he is EONS more qualified and a better hire than Jason Garrett was. I also like what we've heard about all the self scouting and evaluation into other offensive styles and systems while he was out of work. It shows that he is not so rigid and set in his ways that he can be flexible and is open to change.
4) Looking at his time in GB, he won 10+ games 8 times during a 10 season run that ended in 2017. 9 times he fielded an offense that finished in the top-10 in scoring, and 7 of those were top-5. In 6 different seasons his teams won at LEAST one playoff game, Garrett won 1 playoff game twice.
5) Not going to pretend I know all about Mike Nolan's defensive style, but he is another coaching lifer who has been a HC, coordinator and position coach. He has coached some good defenses and not surprisingly those were the more talented teams he was DC on (93/94 Giants, Ravens in early 2000's, Falcons teams with Mike Smith for a couple yrs). He does have a track record for coaching defenses that force decent amounts of turnovers, something we sorely need here. He's also the son of former Landry assistant Dick Nolan
6) It's not like I watch a lot of Packers football, but over the years they have been on TV a lot. I don't recall many (if any) OBVIOUS bonehead game mis-management errors by him though. Something we saw from Clapper several times a year. This will be a big improvement for sure.
7) Like many, will be very curious to see how McCarthy fills out the staff. Was glad to see several reports that no current assistants were forced on MM, if he keeps a few of them so be it, but hopefully we get new blood on defense and special teams, we need it bad. I did see a report tonight that said MM intends to call plays whether Kellen Moore is retained or not, another positive sign I think.
8) For a team that almost annually cant keep a secret about anything, they did a pretty fair job keeping their plans for this under wraps. Someone was saying the other day this is the longest Jerry has ever went during a season without being on radio, TV or in headlines. And it was satisfying to see this.
Am cautiously optimistic about what we'll be like on the field next year. I don't think any of our players have gotten really good coaching in years, and they will be getting that moving forward. Even if they didn't make any personnel changes (impossible with so many free agents that will likely leave) if the team was relatively healthy, I'd feel pretty good about McCarthy getting 2-3 more wins out of the team than Garrett would.
