Glad preseason is over and we can finally move on to the real stuff. It might not be a championship season but I am still damn pumped about our team and the direction we are going.
1) When I first heard last night that Smith and Nagy were playing, I was worried about them getting hurt more than anything else. But they did play and played very well, and getting them more reps was the right decision by Garrett and Houck. There's not a team in football that will throw more varied fronts and blitz looks than the Jets, so our revamped OL will get a mega test right off the bat. If they can get through this game on the road with no major meltdowns it could be a great omen for our offense this season. I think without a doubt this is our most athletic OL in years. We're going to be able to screen teams to death. The pulling/trapping has also looked great so far. I think Jones and Murray are both going to end up with alot of long gains.
2) At this point, I'd be happy with a 6th or 7th rd pick for Choice. I hope we get something for him, because he is the 4th best RB on the team and is really useless here for us.
3) I made the comment last night, but in 4 preseason games I cant ever recall seeing our defense make fewer plays as a unit than this team did. And by "plays" I'm not just talking about turnovers. I'm talking about hits on the QB, tackles at or behind the LOS, pass deflections, big hits etc etc. Its really been a futile effort. I hope Ryan starts pushing the right buttons soon, otherwise our offense is going to have to be lights out for us to have a chance.
4) Keeping 2 kickers isnt ideal, but there could be a good reason for it. If they feel the defense is really going to struggle, doing anything you can to insure a long field for the other offense is critical. If virtually every Buehler kickoff would be a touchback, that would be huge. Its also possible DeCamillis doesnt like what he sees from our coverage units, and wants someone to boom kickoffs so the other team cant get a return. I do hope they keep Bailey though. I thought his two FG attempts looked far better than anyone else's that we saw, albeit we didnt see many attempts. We dont know what they are seeing in practice.
5) Goodbye and good riddance Igor Olshansky. I hope you help ruin someone else's defense.
6) I still think we'll see veterans added at WR and swing OT (neither Parnell nor Young looked overly good last night, and clearly neither could play more than a few snaps if something happened to Free or Smith) for sure, and I wont be surprised if we see them add a DL and maybe even a DB and OLB. I like Lissemore and would hate to see him cut, but he might not be as ready as we had hoped to play a role. None of the other DL's really did much to stand out either. I know there's been alot of talk about Albright, but he looks like a better practice squad candidate to me. Butler is a liability vs the run and Brandon Williams isnt making the team. They might need a vet there.
7) I know everyone hates him, but Holland did look pretty good last night. He had several impressive blocks in the run game, and I saw him throw a hell of a trap on one Miami DL. If he's healthy, he's a quality backup and good insurance should Nagy struggle.
8) Two of the worst players I've ever seen in uniform for the Cowboys, #79 Lutuli and #33 Randle.
9) Demarco Murray is much more physical than I had been led to believe. he ran hard between the tackles and moved the pile when he was hit. Tanner is a huge find. With Felix as the #1 guy, we are loaded at RB.
10) Stephen McGee is really developing nicely. He was extremely accurate last night and made several bigtime throws, even though most of the game was played in the rain. If I were Jones and Garrett, I'd probably start thinking about signing him to a contract extension. Its obvious he's going to be the #2 guy soon, and in another yr or two he might be something alot more. The rest of the team really seems to respond to him and he has alot of physical ability. He also reportedly has an exceptional work ethic. I bet 80-90% of those stooges in CZ wanted to get rid of this guy after his rookie yr, and many were still pining to replace him this yr with some nobody talent in the April draft. He's another example of why you dont bail on young players too soon. He's a keeper.
