Well the loss was certainly a major disappointment, we found a way to lose again instead of finishing a team off. But there were some encouraging things out there. Sometimes learning to finish teams off is part of a process, as it was when Jimmy was the HC, and as it was in the 60's when we started getting good under Landry (and repeated in the mid 70's, when we had the one non playoff yr, rebuilt the roster around a huge draft class and became a dominant team again)

16 people voted in the Jets prediction thread, and 11 of them said we'd lose. Several said we'd get blown out. I also expected to see us lose. But there they were early in the 4th qtr with a 2 TD lead. If you had told me before the game that we were going to score 24 pts and have almost 400 yds of offense against this defense, I'd have definitely been thrilled.

1) The team was extremely well prepared. I was particularly impressed with the OL. Despite starting 3 first time starters (Costa started one game last yr, at LG for Kosier), essentially with 3 rookies they held up well. Romo got hit a few times and was hurried some, but for the most part he had good time. The Jets threw all sorts of blitzes and multiple fronts as we expected, and never did the OL look completely overmatched. We definitely have a very bright future here with this group of guys. Tyron Smith looked outstanding, and just 3 or 4 days ago he was hurt bad enough to think he might be gone for a month. Imagine how good he'll be once he's 100%.

2) Dez was in full fledged beast mode, then had the issue with cramps and also a bruised quad. Supposedly the bruised quad happened on the punt return. Many are complaining that he stayed out there, but I liked it. The kid has no quit in him and gave full effort. He also showed some real nastiness with his blocking. I love this guy, he's going to be a huge star.

3) Hats off to the defense. They played handcuffed alot of the game, but Ryan had these guys ready to play. I was really pleased with the run defense, as my biggest fear is they'd control the LOS and run for 150+ on us. They managed only 45 yds and 2.8yds per carry.

4) Sux to lose Scandrick, Jones says 3-4 weeks, which means we probably wont see him until after the bye week. But I was really encouraged by the play of Jenkins, who absolutely locked down whoever he was on when he was in there. I dont think he gave up a completion and I loved how he went after Burress when he returned after that blind side hit. I also loved that he kept coming back. He got jacked up good 2 or 3 times but didnt quit. He has been accused by many for being soft, but he didnt play soft last night and showed some real 'tude. I think Ryan has gotten through to him. If Newman can come back next week and be close to 100%, we should be in good shape at CB, especially once Scandrick can play again. Ball didnt play bad either in terms of covering people, but he did badly miss a tackle on Tomlinson.

5) For 3 quarters, Romo played almost as well as a QB can, especially considering the defense the Jets had. He made great throws, he took some shots but kept avoiding mistakes. He through some great touch passes. He showed some fire on the field. Then there was the fumble and the pick. Both of those plays were all on him, and both of them were just awful, lousy decisions. To his credit he owned up to them and admitted losing the game, but at some point just owning up to it isnt enough. He's been in the league long enough to understand game situations, and he totally blew it last night. Not getting the FG and fumbling at the GL was the biggest play of the game IMO.

6) I'm not blaming the officials for the loss, but when you are flagged 7 times and the other guys not once, and the other guys were in the top-10 the previous yr for number of penalties, something is wrong. I saw several things that could have, and probably should have been called. You cant call it two different ways. Wittens PI call was bullshit, especially when you consider some of the contact that constantly went on downfield with their DB's that was not flagged once.

7) I dont know how much longer Jesse Holley and Tashard Choice will be here. Holley is supposed to be a special teams ace, but it appeared he blew it badly on the blocked punt. I dont remember which game, but didnt he have a similar special teams gaffe late last season too? In regards to Choice, he seemed like he was out there half assing it to me, and on several 3rd down plays he totally blocked the wrong guy, getting Romo hit. I saw Romo praising Felix Jones for his blitz pick ups several times, I doubt we'll ever see that with Choice. And its something that the coaches will easily pick up when watching film today.

8) I thought John Phillips played well. Made a couple nice receptions and the 2nd effort to get the first down on his first catch was a big play. But his blocking was only average, and I think we really missed Bennett in this area. We ran the ball pretty good in preseason and he was out there for alot of the best run plays. Will be glad when he returns, I think he'll have a significant impact in our ability to run the football.

9) Sean Lee was outstanding, he has an ultra bright future here. Was all over the place against the run and pass, and really played physical vs the run.

10) D Ware off to a great start. He's gonna have a monster year in this scheme. But we really need someone else to step up opposite him. I know Spencer got credit for a sack, but other than that play (which he broke off of a coverage and closed down the line for, he didnt beat someone for the sack) he only had one other QB pressure I saw the entire game. Victor Butler didnt do anything of note. We really need one of these guys to step up.

11) Hats off to Miles Austin too, kinda the forgotten man. But he's damn good too, and with Witten and Bryant we have as good a group there as anyone has. I doubt he's 100% either, but he had a great game and the TD catch was a great play on his part. His strength when snatching the ball is uncanny. We're blassed to have two great WR's again. Despite not being 100%, he did show a good burst IMO and on the TD, had Cromartie beaten easily on the move. Romo underthrew it a little, otherwise that would have been an easy 6.

It sux we lost, especially the way we lost. But we outplayed that team on the road and should have beaten them. It wasnt a flukey thing that we were in the game, we really took it to them on both sides of the ball for a majority of the game. I'm encouraged about the way we played, especially if go out to SF and bounce back strong this week.

I thought phillips blocking was awful. Dude was constantly pushed back and even worse was consistently on the wrong shoulder. Not impressed.

He had a few decent blocks, pretty sure he helped clear the way on Jones' TD run.

But he's definitely not as good at it as Bennett is. I think the run game will be much improved once he returns.

Nice writeup, and I agree with a lot of it though your opinions and outlook are a bit rosier than mine. I just get so tired of seeing the same things plaguing the team year after year, coach after coach, players after player. It's uncanny.

I was probably most excited with #9. Lee seemed to be everywhere and I can't remember any major mistakes. What a huge upgrade and damned refreshing.

Oh, and aside from Romo, I was most disappointed with Nagy. He's not anywhere close to ready.

I saw him struggle a few times, but he also did alot of good things. I would think unless he really starts struggling and hurting the offense, they'll accept it as growing pains. He is definitely athletic.

He wasnt flagged once for holding either. Usually when young OL struggle they resort to grabbing and pulling from being beaten or out of position badly, and that didnt happen any last night.

I cant find a single positive personally.

We had months to prepare for this game. The players were together in the offseason on there own.

Then we get to the game and the defense which is supposed to be behind the 8 ball and under manned plays its ass off.

everything is in place and romo just plays terrible.

Earlier in the game we had austin on a deep crossing pattern wide open for 7 and kosier totally lost his block and romo gets sacked. Same crap that has happened forever.

Then after the game garrett babied romo and talked about how good the other team is and romo looked like a big baby in his press conference. It was like he was a teenager who was looking for sympathy or something.

So to me no positives. We couldnt even properly protect on a punt.

We needed romo last night to just throw the ball away and go get a tough win. Instead he turned into jeff george and sounded just as dumb as him after the game.

I am completely disgusted. I also am expecting romo for the first time to start to be boo'd at home. I think there are alot of people who are like me and many of us here who defend the guy and know he is an excellent player, only to have to sit through the same thing again. How many times can you make the same mistake before its just not a mistake and its what you are?

Excellant write-up dbair, as always. Speaking of Lee, now THAT'S how an ILB is supposed to play. Bradie James was just atrocious. One of the scariest things I saw out there yesterday was Brookings, James, Sensebaugh, and Ball all on the field at the same time.

I'm through supporting Romo. He'll follow this up with an excellant few games, but sooner or later, he will revert. This is who and what he is. Eventually, he will lose the trust of his teammates and the coach, and that'll be it. And the sad thing is that he's too stupid to realize it. If Al Davis came to us right now and offered a 1st rounder for Romo, I'd take it. I'm tired of treading water. Garrett needs his OWN QB to mold, like Jimmy did with Aikman and Belicek did with Brady. Romo is Parcells'.

Wait so he's not going to play great games from here on out?

Of course he will play great games from here on out. I'm sure of that. But there will be more games like yesterday, and I think they will come more frequently. Those great games will be the shining object of distraction. I now see him for what he relaly is.

I still don't understand why on earth they are calling pass plays on the 2yd line with a 7 pt lead in the 4th, Dallas's defense playing well, Sanchez sucking, no completions and stopping the clock.

The Jets were stagnant at this point. Dallas's OC needs to suck in the ego and run the ball. Take the 3pts. Put the pressure back on the Jets. Not on yourself. THAT fumble play was the KEY play IMO.

The INT was Romo and a moronic decision by him.

Why didn't he run that same play where Felix scored down there, that had Nagy pulling? Why not a toss? If our interior is not up to task in those bunch situations, then why not play to your strength? Why not even a bootleg to allow Romo to score?

LOL, Need to ask Red that question bro. I like your ideas more than I like what dumbass red did in that series.

It's the same situation last season with the Choice (SUCKS) fumble agains the Deadskins. This OC and his arrogance puts his players in positions to lose at the worst time.

Garrett definitely deserves some blame. He outthinks himself quite a bit. He pays so much attention to details that he misses the obvious bigger picture. Sometimes simple is good.

If anything just to kill down the clock. One thing we have learned with this team is that pts are never a given. But, still... Atleast get the 3pts.

I guess you missed Nagy pulling which allowed Felix to score that TD. Nagy started off rough, but once he settled in, he did fine. And we need to be committed to him, so that he can and will be "ready".
