Wow, just wow. They are definitely the Cardiac Cowboys again. 9 straight games decided by 3 pts or less, an NFL Record. The last game not decided by 9 pts or less? The 35-19 home win vs Detroit last yr (and the week before vs the Giants in Garrett's debut)
With all the adversity taken into account, last nights win might have been one of those all timers. With all the injuries, horrendous officiating, mind numbingly stupid snaps by Costa and WR's not knowing the plays, we had absolutely no business winning. In fact we probably should have gotten blown out. I'm 100% convinced we would have been blown out if someone like Wade were still HC. But this team is developing some real mental toughness.
1) Major props to Romo again. For years people have questioned his desire to win and whether the game means enough to him, these last 5 quarters prove without a shadow of a doubt that it does matter to him.
2) Hats off to the defense as well, other than one or two drives the Redskins didnt do much and we basically stoned their running game. The front 7 even without Hatcher for almost the whole game did a great job. Sean Lee is a sensational player. Really intelligent but also has a ton of athletic ability. Is playing physical vs the run and is as good as anyone in the league right now at ILB in pass coverage. Ware and Spencer came up with big plays again when the game was on the line. I thought Newman and Jenkins (despite neither being 100%) had really good games. Cant wait to see how they look when Scandrick is back too.
3) OL is going to clearly be a process. At times they look good, at other times they look bad or not so good. Doug Free didnt have a good game again, though I really believe some of his struggles might be due to having to cover for the LG too. Dockery wasnt any good last week and Nagy is a rookie 7th rd pick. Costa got duped by a school yard act over and over last night. I cant believe they didnt bench him and go with Kowalski, especially after Mosley said the coaches loved what they saw of him vs SF. Even before last night, some of Costa's shotgun snaps were less than quality. Maybe they should consider moving him to LG.
4) The officiating was as bad and as biased as I have ever seen. I dont know what Garrett and Jones do behind the scenes in regards to this stuff, but they absolutely have to do something. We got flagged for 3 holding calls last night and two of them were clearly borderline stuff. We now have 5 or 6 offensive holding calls on the season, while our opponents have none. It doesnt matter how obvious it is, the refs just arnt going to call it. It doesnt get anymore blatant or obvious than their LT grabbing Ware's leg from behind as he's getting beat, and it happened in clear view with the refs view not impeded by anything. And they still dont call it. The call on Alan Ball was shit. The refs blew the Ware sack/fumble play by not ruling on who recovered the ball (which the league changed last yr, they said refs were supposed to rule on it even if they've ruled the player down) just in case of situations like last night. It was clearly a fumble. How the hell can you miss false starts by OL? They missed an obvious one before half time on 3rd down, and instead of it being 3rd and 12, the Skins completed a 3rd and 7 pass and ended up with a FG. They mised 2 or 3 obvious ones in the 2nd half including one on the play where Newman appeared to intercept the pass. I still think he caught that ball. If Ball's play was hitting a defenseless WR, why wasnt Landry's hit on Robinson flagged? Robinson was actually in the air and was clearly defenseless. Then the refs finally DO call a holding on the other team, albeit on a kickoff return. The Skins would have had to start that last drive inside their 10 yd line, instead Hochuli inexplicably says it wasnt holding and they pick up the flag. If it wasnt holding, why did someone see it and throw the flag? I certainly saw it. Hochuli and his crew should be fired, instead I'm sure Goodell will reward them with raises or something. This shit sux.
5) Kevin Ogletree & Tashard Choice: I hope you both see nothing but pine the rest of the year. Ogletree at least semi-redeemed himself with that one handed grab on the game winning drive, otherwise he was as awful as a WR could be. Tashard Choice should never see the field here again. What a pathetic display and the running out of bounds thing was complete idiocy. He's a dog and I hope they cut him. Pretty sure Jimmy would.
6) Can we ever see a game where our players dont drop like flies? Hell how bout even a quarter of football? I've never seen a season like this in regards to injuries for us. Jason Hatcher is getting an MRI today and will almost assuredly miss some time. Jenkins and Newman both got hurt during the game (although both came back). Jones reinjured his shoulder and didnt play on the game winning drive. Romo took some big hits. Alot of the guys we do have playing are nowhere near 100% either.
7) Hey Deangelo Hall, your a punk piece of shit. Just keep on keeping on with your all mouth, no game talk. Most overrated player at DB I've ever seen. You got a new ass tore on you by a guy who probably shouldnt have played. Love it that he's a foreSkin.
8) Props to Dan Bailey, who after missing a chip shot from PAT range last week, has responded by hitting the game winning kick two weeks in a row and his last 8 kicks overall. And all 6 of those kicks last night were dead straight down the middle. His kickoffs werent as bad as we had expected either.
9) For all the struggles of the OL, its kinda getting lost about how good Tyron Smith really is. What a stud this kid is going to be for years to come.
10) While the offense in general was ugly, I was happy to see them stick with the run and in the 2nd half, they cracked some big plays. Felix Jones missed one or two cutbacks earlier in the game, but he didnt miss them later on. He would have had close to 150 yds if not for the somewhat picky holding call on Bennett. Jones ended up with a really good game overall, and his blocking on blitzes/pass protection is text book.
People can nitpick about certain things and complain about "ugly wins" but the fact is we're 2-1 and gutted out 2 really tough wins, finding ways to win instead of inventing ways to lose. We had every reason in the world to lose this week and last week, but found a way to win both games. Its all part of a process, but being mentally tough and coming up with big plays in key times are how teams go from losers to winners. We may not be a super bowl team this yr (too early to say obviously, its not even October) but I definitely see reasons to be excited about the team and the direction the team is going.
