When the Eagles burned their first-round pick on Danny Watkins two Aprils ago, he was projected to slide in at right guard and stick there deep into the future.

After making 12 uneven starts as a rookie in 2011, Watkins was eventually benched last season and now looms as a potential cut, according to Vaughn Johnson of Philly.com.

Watkins also made our list of veterans hurt by this year's draft. With first-round pick Lane Johnson likely to start at right tackle across from bookend Jason Peters -- and Jason Kelce penciled in at center -- that leaves Watkins to battle Todd Herremans and Evan Mathis for snaps inside.

Watkins ranked 54th among 81 qualifying guards last season, per ProFootballFocus. His pass blocking especially was disastrous.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman talked last month about a "fresh start" for Watkins under new coach Chip Kelly. If Watkins doesn't make the cut, there's always Canada. Watkins hails from up north and was drafted in 2010 by the CFL's B.C. Lions, who still hold his rights.

A more logical landing spot, if he's sent packing, is the Kansas City Chiefs under Andy Reid, who drafted Watkins in Philly. It's May and those decisions are months away, but Watkins is on the hook to show he belongs.

Wasn't he like 26 or something anyway when he came out? I disliked him as a prospect for that reason.

But Dallas had him as a potential prospect for our pick that year IIRC.

Goes to show you how awful we are at judging OL talent.

A lot of Cowboys fans wanted him as well. He was a popular choice for 2nd round pick in mocks. Sorta like Ronald Leary was this year.

It just shows how difficult the draft process is. He was a guy that draftniks were raving about prior to the draft.

I don't know what happened to the guy. He was a solid prospect when he was drafted and he seemed to be on his way to having a good career. He was starting to catch on his rookie season. One thing to consider is that Philly brought in Mudd as a OL coach and he likes a smaller type of lineman. He is not going to get much better at his age, but a team that wants a brawling type of guard should take a chance on him. He could be much better in a different system.

If he is cut I would definitely put in a waiver claim. He can not possibly be worse than David Arkin.
