The San Diego Chargers cut wide receiver Laurent Robinson at the end of the preseason last year, in a move that later proved to be a gift in disguise for the Dallas Cowboys.
Robinson was signed by the Cowboys in September to the veteran league minimum salary. A far cry from the multi-million dollar salary doled out to frequently injured Miles Austin, the wideout Robinson would eventually end up besting the very same season.
With Robinson posting impressive numbers on the season—tying for fourth most receiving touchdowns in the league with 11 and recording 54 receptions and 858 yards—it was clearly obvious that, in Robinson, Dallas had truly found a hidden gem.
Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas reported earlier this week Robinson will do anything to keep the star on the side of his helmet, regardless of where he falls on the depth chart.
“This is where I want to be,” Robinson told ESPN Dallas. “It doesn’t matter if I’m the No. 1, 2 or 3. I feel like I have a good fit here.”
A good fit indeed, considering Robinson performed in near parallel fashion to fellow wide receiver and 2010 first-round draft pick, Dez Bryant.
Upon speaking exclusively with a source close to the team, the Cowboys do indeed want Robinson back. However, the source also said money is still at the root of the issue since the team would have to shell out a considerable amount of cap money for another wide receiver.
Robinson, himself, has alluded to the notion the Cowboys have hinted they have every intention of retaining him, and it would certainly behoove owner/general manager Jerry Jones to do so.
If Jerry doesn’t get ahead of the curve, he could find himself watching Robinson don a different uniform next year.
It's no secret the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears are all teams who are in need of a quality receiver. In the tentative class of free agent wideouts, Robinson near the top of the enticing list of those who would quickly be picked up.
“Money doesn’t drive me to play this game,” Robinson said. “I play because I like to have fun. I think I have a good fit here with the Cowboys.”
Dallas certainly wouldn’t mind Robinson having more fun with them.
