The San Diego Chargers cut wide receiver Laurent Robinson at the end of the preseason last year, in a move that later proved to be a gift in disguise for the Dallas Cowboys.

Robinson was signed by the Cowboys in September to the veteran league minimum salary. A far cry from the multi-million dollar salary doled out to frequently injured Miles Austin, the wideout Robinson would eventually end up besting the very same season.

With Robinson posting impressive numbers on the season—tying for fourth most receiving touchdowns in the league with 11 and recording 54 receptions and 858 yards—it was clearly obvious that, in Robinson, Dallas had truly found a hidden gem.

Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas reported earlier this week Robinson will do anything to keep the star on the side of his helmet, regardless of where he falls on the depth chart.

“This is where I want to be,” Robinson told ESPN Dallas. “It doesn’t matter if I’m the No. 1, 2 or 3. I feel like I have a good fit here.”

A good fit indeed, considering Robinson performed in near parallel fashion to fellow wide receiver and 2010 first-round draft pick, Dez Bryant.

Upon speaking exclusively with a source close to the team, the Cowboys do indeed want Robinson back. However, the source also said money is still at the root of the issue since the team would have to shell out a considerable amount of cap money for another wide receiver.

Robinson, himself, has alluded to the notion the Cowboys have hinted they have every intention of retaining him, and it would certainly behoove owner/general manager Jerry Jones to do so.

If Jerry doesn’t get ahead of the curve, he could find himself watching Robinson don a different uniform next year.

It's no secret the San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears are all teams who are in need of a quality receiver. In the tentative class of free agent wideouts, Robinson near the top of the enticing list of those who would quickly be picked up.

“Money doesn’t drive me to play this game,” Robinson said. “I play because I like to have fun. I think I have a good fit here with the Cowboys.”

Dallas certainly wouldn’t mind Robinson having more fun with them.

I think he has more value to us than to any other team. It is not a given he would go to another team and blow up like he did this year with us...I think that is attributed to his relationship with Romo...he might now be able to re-create that with another QB. Give him 3 for 9 and be done with it.

Good. An unselfish player who doesn't want a lot of money. He's a Cowboy next year.

The team I worry about him going to is Washington. They need receivers.

Hopefully he stays and doesn't care about the money.

You needed to talk to a "source" to conclude that the Cowboys have an interest in retaining Robinson, but that money might be an issue?

You seem really plugged in, Jasmine Sadry.

I've yet to meet an ugly Jasmine or Kelly in my lifetime.

EDIT: Happy I've never met Jasmine Sadry or else I'd alter my statement above.

Cowboys a fit for Laurent Robinson
January, 17, 2012
By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas -- A lot of times when players are about to hit free agency, all they see is dollar signs.

After playing for four or more years with one team, they look forward to the open market, dreaming of the biggest payday.

That sure didn’t sound like Laurent Robinson last week when he appeared on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM’s Ben and Skin Show.

“This is where I want to be,” Robinson said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m the No. 1, 2 or 3. I feel like I have a good fit here.”

Maybe Robinson has a different view on his impending free agency because he did not make his mark with three organizations before joining the Cowboys, but if he is talking about “fit” and not about the “money” then the Cowboys have a good shot at re-signing Robinson, who caught 11 touchdown passes as part of his 54-catch, 858-yard season.

Robinson and Tony Romo meshed right away, which flew in the face of the excuses we heard during Roy Williams’ run with the Cowboys.

Back in 1995, Alvin Harper was in a great position as the Cowboys’ No. 2 receiver opposite Michael Irvin but left to become the No. 1 receiver in Tampa Bay with a four-year, $10.6 million contract, which at the time was a large deal, and it never panned out.

It never panned out for Peerless Price in Atlanta (seven years, $37.5 million) after he caught 94 passes for 1,252 yards from Drew Bledsoe. It didn’t work out for David Givens in Tennessee (five years, $24 million) in part because of injury. It didn’t work out for T.J. Houshmandzadeh in Seattle (five years, $40 million). A pair of trades didn’t work for Javon Walker (from Green Bay to Denver and a five-year, $40 million contract) or Deion Branch (from New England to Seattle and a six-year, $39 million deal).

Branch was traded back to New England and it’s working out just fine once again because he fits with Tom Brady.

Funny how that worked.

It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and say, ‘Don’t think about the money.’ What would most of us do if you could do the same job somewhere else for a large check?

The Cowboys need Robinson in a lot of ways because there always seems to be something with Dez Bryant and Miles Austin was hurt most of 2011. He is not a No. 1 receiver, but he showed he could fill in for Bryant and Austin when they were hurt and excel.

If fit matters, as the wide out said, then the Cowboys have a chance to keep him.

sorry.

I cant help it, I just see serious problems coming and the constant negative distraction wont be good for a team about to rebuild its identity and locker room.

I just dont think you should stick with guys like him in this situation. Its time to rebuild this whole thing and everyone needs to be on the same page. I am not going to go crazy about it, I have said my peace but I think reading that he had to be locked out of the very first meeting at training camp really tells you all you need to know.

perfect year to clean out the old veterans who have accepted losing and lost there ability to play at a high level and the future problem guys.

Hate to be two more years into this having a good season riding romo, ware and wittens possible final big years here and then have this knucklehead go off on something and ruin a season.

I just don't see it like you do. There's being an immature ****** but I don't see any malice or selfishness in Dez. Hell Keyshawn was more selfish and self-absorbed with dez and Parcells couldn't get enough of him. I don't see the urgency in getting rid of someone who has such a high ceiling.

None of our receivers can stay on the field. Austin and Robinson have an even worse history than Dez. It would take a godfather deal to make me think about dealing him and then only if we had already re-signed Robinson.

Anyhow I think we both know it's not going to happen.

Problem here is that this team has no true leadership. We don't have a guy like Ray Lewis who's gonna get on everyone's ass and keep things in line. The players def aren't afraid of the coaches. Our best guys (Romo, Ware, Witten, Austin, Lee) just don't have the qualities that every team needs from at least one prominent player.

Not sure how to fix that type of culture in Dallas but leadership would really get guys like Dez in line. Deion publicly denounced him and I don't think anyone else has stepped in to take charge.

Also, Theebs wants to do the girl who looks like a horse.

I don't know what I hate worse. Ray Lewis, or people who always bring up Ray Lewis when trying to name a leader who keeps everyone in check.
