Dallas Cowboys hope to duplicate good-bye run of 2009
IRVING -- The Dallas Cowboys return to work today after Sunday's bye knowing they still have a lot of work to do.
They are 1-2 and must continue to dig themselves out of the 0-2 hole they dug to start the season.
But they have hope in what is a struggling NFC East. Washington's win over Philadelphia and the New York Giants' win over Chicago on Sunday leaves the Redskins, Eagles and Giants tied for first at 2-2.
The Cowboys also have hope in last season, when they righted themselves following a poor start with a victory before the bye week.
Last season, chaos abounded after a loss to the Denver Broncos, leaving the Cowboys at 2-2.
But they bonded in a thrilling overtime victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, ultimately sparking a playoff run.
The Cowboys refocused their energy during the bye and corrected some mistakes. They then reeled off five wins in the next six weeks, including three straight.
The Cowboys are counting on a similar result in 2010.
This year's bye was preceded by a dominating 27-13 victory against the Houston Texans, in which the Cowboys offered a glimpse of the team everybody thought they would be to open the season.
"I think I do [believe it's similar]," coach Wade Phillips said. "I think the spark is what we can do, more so than last year. The Kansas City game was an overtime, close game. We came through that kind of game. This one was more dominant.
"Maybe it's another level, another step that, hey, we can do this, and when we play well we can win by two touchdowns against a really good team. That's a pretty big step forward. Again, it's only one win and we have to realize that."
The opportunity is certainly there.
The Cowboys have three home games over the next four weeks, starting with the Tennessee Titans (2-2) at 3:15 p.m. Sunday.
They play at Minnesota on Oct. 17 before returning home for games against the Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars, who upset Indianapolis on Sunday.
