One might imagine that by selecting just two defensive players, the fewest the team has drafted since 1962, the Cowboys bosses may have infuriated their new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan.
It doesn't appear Ryan will get any immediate, significant help from this eight-man draft class. Second-rounder Bruce Carter is still recovering from a serious knee injury. Fifth-rounder Josh Thomas is a depth player for now, at best. Again, this team gave up the second-most points in the league last year.
What is Ryan, a miracle worker? Apparently he didn't complain too much.
"Rob's the best," Stephen Jones said. "When it comes to that he said 'Just tell me who I'm coaching. I'll have them ready.' First draft with him - enjoyed it."
Ryan may not have been expressing frustration with his needs going unmet because, as Jones explained Saturday evening, the Cowboys could still be players to land defensive free agents.
Though Ryan was quiet, one of his defensive assistants did voice some displeasure to head scout Tom Ciskowski on Saturday about his position not landing any young players.
