Is that correct?

I just read that in a Brandon George chat. That's ridiculous.

Wouldn't suprise me if he's still on the roster in 2012 if that is the case.

We ought to ask him to restructure, or take a pay cut, and change his role. Depending on how the offseason unfolds, I wouldn't mind him coming back. I think hes lost his deep speed, and shouldn't start anymore, but I still think he's got his quickness and would serve as a steady nickle or dime CB.

I disagree Dooms. Newman is done - toast. I think you want your third, fourth, etc corners to play special teams. I don't think Newman would. Unless we finally used him as a punt returner.

But yeah, I think the team is better served moving on from him and other old guys on the D (James, Brookings, etc).

Havent read all the ins and outs of the new agreement, but if its like the last one they could cut him after June 1st and split take only a prorated hit this yr (2012) and the remainder in 2013, which is what they'd probably do unless they restructure his deal altogether.

He's done. The problem is a new starter will need to be brought in. Cowboys have said numerous times Scandrick is their nickel(third) cornerback, this year and beyond.

We will most likley see 3 new CB's next year with 1 of them possibly being practice squad member Mario Butler. Along with Newman, I don't think Alan Ball or Frank "the holding machine" Walker will be back next year. Mike Jenkins will be in the last year of his contract in 2012 as well.

That can't be right. Newman signed a 5 year contract where he would received all of his guaranteed money in the first 3 years of his new contract. He is currently in the last year of the 3 year guaranteed portion of that contract. After this season the Cowboys would have the option of retaining him.

You are incorrect sir.

5/20/2008: Signed a six-year, $50.2 million contract extension through 2014. The deal contains $22.5 million guaranteed, including a $12 million signing bonus. 2011: $8 million, 2012: $6.016 million, 2013: $7,600,417, 2014: $7.5 million, 2015: Free Agent

I forgot about Butler. I'm surprised he's still on our PS. I would have thought sopmebody would have snagged him. He was having a damn good camp, and I was hoping he would supplant Ball. I think they will extend Jenkins.

Now, I know for a few years some corners were getting ridiculous contracts (see Nate Clements, San Francisco)... but at no point was Newman ever worth that much money.

He was one of the better CB's in football when we resigned him, he was worth the deal. 22.5mils guaranteed is less than 4 mils per season of his contract. I doubt they ever expected he'd see the last couple years of that deal.

How am I incorrect? The $22.5 million in guaranteed was to be paid over the first 3 years of the contract. Now if he signed that extension in 2008, than in either 2010---last year or the end of this year, is the last year of the guaranteed portion that covers the first 3 years.

He signed a 6-year deal and still has significant cap hits in 2012 ($8.016 million), 2013 ($9.6 m), and 2014 ($9.5M). This doesn't include any roster or performance bonuses that will increase the cap hits. I believe if we cut him after June 1, we'd take a cap hit of approx $6 m in accelerated bonus money in 2013 versus his $8 m cap hit if he stays in 2012. I think we can get a lot more for $8 million than an aging Newman. Even the $6 m in dead money wont be as bad as his 2013 cap hit of $9.5 m.

Ok. I'll take your word for it. Where did you get your info though?

Only gauranteed portions and bonus money gets accelerated when a player is cut. That's why you see so many bogus contracts that are backloaded. Think: Albert Haynesworth and the skins. If we owed him 50 mil for next year's salary and cut him, that 50 mil disappears, and only the rest of his bonus would count against the cap.

So the cap hit is nowhere near 12 million right?

Contract:6 yr(s) / $50,200,000 Signing Bonus $12,000,000 Average Salary $8,366,667 End Year:2014 Free Agent:2015 / Unrestricted
BASE SALARY S. BONUS MISC. BONUS CAP HIT
2008 1,416,417 2,000,000 - 3,416,417
2009 1,694,165 2,000,000 - 3,694,165
2011 8,000,000 2,000,000 - 10,000,000
2012 6,016,000 2,000,000 - 8,016,000
2013 7,600,417 2,000,000 - 9,600,417
2014 7,500,000 2,000,000 - 9,500,000
2015

So from this it says Newman would cost 8 mil to cut. I dont know how much he would cost to cut after june1 but im sure it would go down more. He's gone in 2012

That cap hit does not make sense because the only hit you take is prorated Bonus and by that list he is owed 6 million in bonus money after this year.
