SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys opened discussions with defensive end Stephen Bowen on Tuesday, but they also have an interest in Green Bay’s Cullen Jenkins, according to a source.
Jenkins, 30, missed the final four regular-season games and the Packers’ run to the Super Bowl because of a calf strain, but he finished with seven sacks, a high total for a 3-4 defensive end. In his seven seasons in Green Bay Jenkins, 6-2, 305 pounds, recorded 29 sacks.
The Cowboys have a need along the defensive line because in addition to Bowen, Marcus Spears and Jason Hatcher are unrestricted free agents. Bowen showed last year he could be a three-down player, filling in after Spears went down for the year with a calf injury.
The Cowboys would like to keep Bowen, but Jenkins’ familiarity with the 3-4 and pass rush ability make him a top-of-the-line candidate as well to pair with Jay Ratliff on the interior in passing situations.
In the draft the Cowboys were interested in 3-4 defensive ends like J.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Cameron Jordan, looking at them as possible three-down players as well.
