Cowlishaw: Problem with Cowboys starts with Jerry Jones being GM, 'a problem that will never go away'
SportsDayDFW sports
The Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw chatted with fans on Wednesday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys and the head coach situation. Here are some highlights:
Who are the Cowboys going after for their next head coach? What about Jim Harbaugh of Stanford?
Not sure how Cowboys' off-season search will go. I think Harbaugh is a definite candidate. I think Jerry will want an offensive minded coach that can fire up the fan base. Like it or not, I think Gruden will be a real candidate if he can play with Jerry's rules, which I think he could.
It's funny how everyone wants Wade Phillips fired when the problem is clearly the players. If these guys can't get up for a guy like Wade then I don't think they play for anyone.
I disagree. The problem involves a whole lot of things and obviously it starts with Jerry being the GM, a problem that will never go away. But Wade does have responsibility here. The country club atmosphere only works if you have responsible leaders among the players. This team doesn't. These guys know -- at least to this point -- they can give a half-decent effort and get away with it. Things are cyclical. Veteran players will put up with in-your-face coaches as you say when they have been through failure. And this team has experienced plenty of that.
Jon Gruden seems like the best fit for the Cowboys; he is still young and a Super Bowl winner.
Well, he's a Super Bowl winner with someone else's team. Of course, the team he beat (Raiders) was his team. That was an odd situation. Gruden leaves a lot of unhappy players in his wake. But I'm not against giving him a shot. I do like him on MNF even though he seems to like every player in the league.
How likely is it that Wade Phillips will coach the remainder of the season?
I'm glad you asked. I thought while watching that mess Sunday that had to be it. And Wade all but asked to be fired with his comments Sunday and Monday as to how he has failed these players. I'm not sure what would trigger his firing if that game won't. So I would have to guess he won't be fired until after the season. The team will probably play well Sunday night and that might earn him two more months. But it's all in Jerry's head so anyone who says they know the answer is kidding you; we are all guessing based on how Jerry has acted these last 21 years.
