The Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw answered a wide variety of questions in a chat Wednesday. Here are a few topics and responses that relate to the Cowboys.
On a prediction for the Cowboys/Saints game:
Tim Cowlishaw: We will not win. Neither will the Cowboys. I like the Saints about 27-17. New Orleans has gotten its act together the last month. When everyone talks about NFC teams for the Super Bowl and mentions Philly, Green Bay and Atlanta, they better start including the Saints in that picture, too. ... I like the Saints defense to do a lot better job against Kitna than the Lions' defense did.
On if Jerry Jones already has his mind made up about keeping Jason Garrett as head coach regardless of how the rest of the season plays out:
Tim Cowlishaw: No. There would be no point in making up his mind right now. He might be leaning towards keeping Garrett as head coach -' and that's the way I would go -- but there are six games left and no urgency to make a decision. Because of the Rooney Rule, he can't make an official decision until after the season anyway. So why stop weighing your options in November when you have until January to finalize a decision?
On Wade Phillips comparing his winning record in Dallas to Tom Landry's record:
Tim Cowlishaw: I saw his quote in defending his time here. I think there's no way to say that and not have it taken the wrong way. Also, I think it shows he doesn't get that regular season winning percentage is one thing. Trips to 5 Super Bowls and I think, without stopping to look it up, 12 NFC-NFL championship games put Landry in such a different class from Wade it's ridiculous to even discuss. I don't think Wade meant it to make him sound like an idiot. But he did.
On Jeff Fisher being Jerry Jones' first choice as head coach next year if he's fired by the Titans:
Tim Cowlishaw: I would hope not. What's the love affair with Jeff Fisher? He got a team to a Super Bowl. Once. Eleven years ago. In any place but Nashville would that get him a lifetime contract? I think Fisher's a good coach but he's completely bungled the Vince Young situation with his tough guy act. His team is also usually the leader among renegades in the NFL. So the answer, for me, is a definite no.
