We started yet another series on the website, as you probably already noticed. And writing about the season opener against the Jets wasn’t too difficult. All kinds of storylines will take over that game and it’s unlikely that a rookie or two will garner much attention.
But in looking at the Jets’ draft class this season, it would be one the Cowboys probably wouldn’t mind trading with if they just had to swap with someone. Now, one thing missing from it is offensive linemen, and since the Cowboys took three of them in their own draft, then it might not work out.
However, the players the Jets picked all seemed to have either some interest by the Cowboys or at least some ties.
1st round (30th overall), DT, Muhammad Wilkerson, Temple
3rd round (94th), DT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton
4th round (126th) RB Bilal Powell, Louisville
7th round (208th) QB, Greg McElroy, Alabama
7th round (227th) WR, Scotty McKnight, Colorado
Wilkerson was one of the defensive linemen the Cowboys were apparently eyeing late in the first round and had some thoughts about trading up into the first round or early second to take. Once Wilkerson and Ohio State’s Cameron Heyward went off the board, the Cowboys decided to stay put at their 40th spot.
Ellis and Powell both came in on pre-draft visits and both Kerley and McElroy, the son of Cowboys’ VP of sales and marketing Greg McElroy Sr., attended the Dallas Day workout at Cowboys Stadium.
Not saying the Cowboys would’ve wanted every single pick the Jets had, but I’m sure they discussed in detail the possibilities of having all of them at some point.
