In need of a quarterback to help get through Thursday's final preseason game, the Dallas Cowboys are bringing in Austin Davis for a visit Wednesday, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports. This according to a source.

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott isn't expected to play Thursday against Houston at AT&T Stadium. The only other healthy quarterback on the Cowboys' roster is Jameill Showers.

The Cowboys have been looking to add a veteran quarterback to the roster after Tony Romo was lost for six to 10 weeks with a fractured bone in his back.

If the Cowboys sign Davis on Wednesday, he could serve as Showers' backup Thursday against the Texans and then Dallas would have to make a decision on him by the final cuts deadline Saturday, when all NFL teams have to get down to 53 players.

Davis, 27, was released Monday by the Cleveland Browns. In three games last year with Cleveland, he was 56-of-94 passing for 547 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Davis was with St. Louis his first three years in the league. In 2014, Davis played in 10 games for the Rams, finishing 180-for-284 passing for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Take it FWIW but Fisher is suggesting they may sign Davis today to have as backup tomorrow night and then see what happens with other veterans Saturday.

He did QB the Jets to back to back AFC Championship games.

I think he's clearly regressed since then, but he does have some positive experience to look at.
Oh man. Let's not harken back on the days when people thought Sanchez might be worth half a shit. We've figured that out. He's not.

Cowboys still don't have deal with QB Austin Davis, but like him as option to be Dak Prescott's backup
By Brandon George

Dallas Cowboys coaches met with veteran quarterback Austin Davis on Wednesday morning and he remained at The Star in Frisco during the club's annual kickoff luncheon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The two sides talked about a deal but have yet to come to an agreement. Davis was released Monday by Cleveland. He went 3-7 in 10 starts over the last two seasons for the Browns and Rams.

The Cowboys are in search of a veteran quarterback now that starter Tony Romo is lost for six to 10 weeks with a fractured bone in his back. Rookie Dak Prescott will begin the season as the starter. The only other healthy quarterback on the roster is Jameill Showers.

Prescott won't play in Thursday's preseason finale against Houston. Showers is expected to play the entire game.

The Cowboys wanted to sign Davis so he could be available for Thursday's preseason game, even though he'd be unlikely to play. Davis wants assurances that he'll be around longer than a few days.

The Cowboys want Davis to stick around longer. They view him as a possible option to serve as Prescott's backup while Romo is out, a source said, rather than just an extra body to get through the final preseason game.

However, a better option could pop up for the Cowboys via the waiver wire as teams make their final cuts Saturday.

Todd Archer tweeting that a deal is unlikely at this point.

I think they were really only looking to sign him for tonight's game. Dak's backup for the season likely won't be signed until after Saturday's cuts. I still think it's going to be Aaron Murray.
