INDIANAPOLIS -- One of the 60 interviews the Dallas Cowboys will conduct with draft prospects at the NFL scouting combine over the next few days will be with Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, according to vice president/director of player personnel Stephen Jones.

Newton led Auburn to a BCS championship in his one year as a starter, throwing for 2,854 yards and rushing for 1,473 and combining for 50 touchdowns.

"I think obviously that position of quarterback you're immediately going to start looking for leadership," Jones said. "You're going to start looking for intangibles, and his physical abilities are pretty good. As far as in an interview, you're looking for a guy who is going to be the face of your organization that you feel like will be a leader for your team and is a winner."

The Cowboys hold the ninth pick in the first round of April's draft and have not drafted a quarterback in the first round since selecting Troy Aikman with the No. 1 overall pick in 1989. Interviewing Newton should be viewed as the Cowboys learning as much as they can about a player who burst onto the scene in one year, not a surefire sign they would draft him.

"This is what we do every year," Jones said. "You got to do all your work because you never know what's going to happen in a draft. It's part of doing your diligence as a personnel department. You can never assume anything and you can't leave any stone unturned. Give [director of college and pro scouting] Tom [Ciskowski] and our guys a lot of credit; they work hard at it and we get prepared."

Because of the offense Newton played in at Auburn and his limited -- albeit successful -- track record, there are questions he will need to address over the next month for teams.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones believes Tony Romo is the type of quarterback that can lead his team to a Super Bowl. Romo is under contract through 2013. Backup Jon Kitna played well in Romo's absence last season and is signed through 2011. Stephen McGee won his only start and showed potential in the final two games. He is signed through 2012.

Newton: I'm an icon.

Jerry: I'm an NFL General Manager.

Stephen: I'm a Director of Player Personnel.

I don't like to say what "if", but what if we draft this guy at 9?

I know it won't satisfy a lot of members here.

Yeah, you can say I'm not a big Cam Newton fan either, plus why the hell would we go QB with the first pick.

That's the way Jerruh rolls though.

You know what?

The way Jerry praised Quinthy when we drafted him it wouldn't surprise me to see us take Cam Newton with our first pick.

He's that dumb of a GM.

I'll have to have plastic surgery to re-implant my jaw from the floor and reattach my hand/fist from the wall if I hear "With the 9th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys select Cam Newton QB, University of Auburn"

There's just so many other positions of need. There's going to be a DT, DE, OLB, or OT there with the ninth pick it would be foolish to take him.

Think about this, we have Romo, Kitna, and McGee. You know Romo and Kitna are locks. The only one I see getting cut if we take a QB would be McGee, but Jerruh as good of a GM that he thinks he is will come out at say McGee is our future QB. Hilarious.

Having said that we shouldn't take a QB at 9. :awkward

It's not going to happen.

1) Newton won't be on the board.

2) Jerry loves Romo too much.
