By Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas -- With Martellus Bennett flying to visit the New York Giants, the Cowboys are not wasting time shopping for a second tight end to play alongside Jason Witten.

According to a source, the Cowboys will visit with Chicago’s Kellen Davis, and another source said the Cowboys have an interest in John Carlson, who missed last season with a shoulder injury. Carlson is visiting with Kansas City and has received interest from other teams, as well.

The Cowboys like to use two-tight end packages. Bennett was a solid blocker but went three years without a touchdown catch. He had 17 catches for 144 yards in 2011.

Davis, at 6-foot-7, 267 pounds, caught 18 passes for 206 yards with five touchdowns last season for the Bears in an offense that did not feature the tight end. He has 28 catches for 300 yards and nine touchdowns in his career.

Carlson has 137 catches for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns, but he did not play last year and was limited to 31 catches in 2010 after catching 106 passes his first two seasons.

Who is it in this organization that values #2 TEs above filling starting positions with holes?

Who says they do? You?

Its a key position in the offense. There are some decent candidates available. If they dont get one via free agency, they almost assuredly have to get one early in the draft. And this is not a good, or deep TE crop.

I'm not saying the position isn't important. I'm saying it seems like its a top priority every time we lose a backup TE.

Trade Fasano, draft Bennett in 2nd round.
Lose Bennett to FA, better get right on replacing him.

Yet the offensive line was ignored for years, they've plugged bums in without thinking twice. Same with the safety positions here.

Im just saying I'd like to hear that we're vigorously trying to improve the line before we're trying to get that hole at #2 TE filled ASAP.

It's called being proactive as well as multi-tasking.

We're targeting Carr. We've got Orton either at VR or on the way. This Davis guy, and Dan Connor should be here today. We've negotiated with Robinson and Fiametta.

All within 24 hours of free agency.

Sounds they've got a deal done with him. Regarded as an outstading blocker too.

Seems like a try hard Martellus Bennett.

that is the most important part.....does he like football? Is it the most important thing...

not a single person in the world could convince me bennett views football as anything more than a means to make money so he can do the other things in his life he really likes to do....which is ok doesnt make him a bad guy....but is a lousy attitude...

replace him with the same level player at the same size and add wittens love of football and you get better....

So much for "once we get them in the building"

Would have been a nice signing. He starts in Chicago no?

Sounds like all they do is put 2 and 2 together in their own minds and pass it off as source information.
