The Cowboys are one of many teams checking out Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's workout today. This is not a big deal because this is what the Cowboys planned on doing all along.
Team officials spent 15 minutes with Newton at the combine and it appeared things came across well with the young quarterback. Whether or not the Cowboys draft a quarterback is uncertain.
In fact, I doubt it. But as Stephen Jones said a few weeks ago, NFL teams have to check everything about every potential prospects that might become available when it's time to pick.
With the No. 9 pick of the first round, the Cowboys most likely will select a defensive player, whether it's a cornerback or defensive lineman because those areas need the most improvement.
There's nothing wrong with taking an offensive lineman but I wonder if you can find a quality tackle in the second round. Of course all of this changes by the day with NFL teams after pro days, interviews and the such.
So for now, the Cowboys are watching Newton do his thing and probably thinking about somebody else to pick with the ninth pick. The love for Newton isn't strange, it's part of the Cowboys also throwing smoke out there about who they like. Of course they like Newton, who doesn't, but with a talented quarterback in Tony Romo in place for three more years, why reach out to Newton?
It's to drive his stock up and possibly bring the stock down of somebody else, like one of those talented defensive ends.
But Newton's combine throwing session, which didn't look good, might have lowered his stock. A stronger performance today, which is expected under a controlled setting, should push him back up.
