Cowboys to call up Bryan McCann, add Ross Weaver to practice squad
Todd Archer / Reporter
The Cowboys have added cornerback Bryan McCann to the 53-man roster as an insurance policy with Terence Newman bothered by a rib muscle and cartilage injury that knocked him out of last week's game vs. Jacksonville.
McCann, an SMU product, was among the Cowboys' final cuts and was spent a week with Baltimore before re-joining the Cowboys practice squad. He's not the biggest but he has speed (he can be a kick returner) and will fight.
The Cowboys were nearly caught even more shorthanded vs. the Jaguars when Orlando Scandrick needed to be looked at by the trainers although he did not miss a snap. Had Scandrick been knocked out of that game, Mike Jenkins would have been the only true corner on the roster and Alan Ball would have had to move from free safety. With Akwasi Owusu-Ansah out with an ankle injury, they would have had to use safety Danny McCray in the nickel package.
To replace McCann on the practice squad, the Cowboys will sign Ross Weaver, who was in for a workout earlier this season. Weaver, 6-1,203 pounds, was signed by Miami as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State and spent time on Seattle's practice squad.
