IRVING, Texas -- Last week Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was asked who he could count on to deliver when it mattered most. He mentioned the veterans of the team.
A day after the 37-36 loss to the Green Bay Packers Garrett was asked the same question.
“Same answer,” he said. “Same answer. Great deal of confidence of those guys, the leader of our football team. Still feel good some of the others and the younger guys and newer guys stepping up and doing some positive things. But the leaders of this team on offense, defense and kicking game are the guys we're going to rely on and they're gonna play well and going to lead us down the stretch this season.”
Garrett is talking about Jason Witten, Tony Romo, DeMarcus Ware, Doug Free, Jason Hatcher and others that have been around for the past couple of years. The last two years the Cowboys have not been able to claim playoff spots in the final weeks of the season, yet Garrett's belief remains.
“Often times things don't always go well and I have enough faith and believe in each other that we can get the job done is critical when we get that next opportunity,” Garrett said, “and it's Sunday in Washington.
Despite the clock management last week and the defensive shortcomings for most of the season, belief in the coaches remains from the players.
“One-hundred percent faith in Garrett, (Bill) Callahan and everyone else on the team,” right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau said. “We've just got to do a better job executing.”
With wins against the Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys win the NFC East. It's that simple.
But is it tough to keep believing?
“It's not tough at all,” defensive end George Selvie said. “Everybody's got to realize what position we're in. We've still got a chance to go to the playoffs. We've got two games against two teams we've played and won. But we have to go out and do it again. We just got to play like the last time we played those guys.”
